New Haven, Conn. - A near even first quarter was all that Adelphi women's basketball could muster on Wednesday evening, as it's opponent Southern Connecticut State ran away with a 65-37 decision, inside the James Moore Field House.
Midway through the first, the Cats (9-9, 5-6 NE10) held their largest lead of the contest at four, but a 9-1 run in favor of the hosts put them on top for what would end up being the remainder of the game.
The home team rattled off 19 points in the second quarter to outscore the Panthers in the first half overall. The Owls were helped by 50 percent shooting from the field with a perfect mark beyond the three-point line. Trailing by 12 at the break, Adelphi headed to the locker room to regroup.
Southern Connecticut maintained its stride coming out of halftime, using 10 points alone inside the paint to bolster its lead through the third quarter. The Panthers were responsible for the final seven minutes of the frame, courtesy of
Madison Williams, and
Victoria Morgan, but were still looking at a 16-point deficit with one quarter of regulation remaining.
Kaitlyn O'Connell registered the first bucket of the fourth, but the outdoor temps crept inside as the Cats went scoreless over the ensuing two minutes. The Owls went off for 22 points over 10 minutes - their best quarter of the contest - shooting at a near 60 percent clip from the floor.
Morgan ended up as the leading scorer for Adelphi, as the only player to reach double-figures with 10.
