New Haven, Conn. — Head coach Dave Duke and the Adelphi men's basketball team returned from its weekend break on Wednesday night when they took on Southern Connecticut State in New Haven.
The game started off quick, with both teams responding to each bucket the other made.
Midway through the first half with the game tied at 23, a Mason Jackson jumper sparked a 10-0 Panther run. Buckets from Jackson, Tavin Pierre Phillipe and Jarnel Rancy put Adelphi up 33-23 with six minutes remaining.
SCSU responded with an 11-2 run of their own to take a 40-39 lead.
A pair of Andres Fulgencio free throws with nine seconds remaining gave Adelphi a one point edge heading into the break.
Dayshaun Walton had his best half of basketball so far this season, scoring 18.
The first five minutes of the second half went as expected and were tightly contest. Neither team was able to grab ahold of the game until Adelphi went cold from the floor. While the 'Cats struggled to make their shots, the Owls could not miss as the home team regained the lead.
SCSU's lead grew to as much as 17 and while the Panthers continued to fight throughout the remainder of the contest, the deficit was too much.
Adelphi's longest win streak since the 2005-06 season ended at 12 as the Brown and Gold fell, 82-69.
Walton led the team with 23 points, followed by Jackson who potted 14
Jarnel Rancy led the team in rebounds (seven) and blocks (three).
The Panthers will return to the court on Saturday at 3:30 PM when they travel to Assumption in a pivotal Northeast-10 matchup.
