Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Dave Duke and the Adelphi men's basketball team welcomed No. 7 nationally ranked Pace to the CRS on Tuesday night as they looked to extend their win streak to 12.
The game started off at a blistering pace, with both squads trading buckets. The first big defensive stand of the game came for at Adelphi at the 12:29 mark. The Panther defense shut down the Setter attack to force a shot clock violation which had the entire bench, including coach Duke, pumped up.
Adelphi followed its strong defense with a Jarnel Rancy and-1 after a dish from Matthew Price. Although he missed the free throw, Rancy's bucket put the 'Cats up seven.
Pace was able to cut the home team's lead to five with just over seven minutes to play but a slam and solo shot from the charity stripe from Nuha Sagnia coupled with more impressive Panther defense grew the lead.
With the Setters continuing to fight, Dayshaun Walton buried a three to put Adelphi up 10 and then blocked a shot on the other end to keep momentum flowing.
20 seconds remained in the period when Andres Fulgencio hit a triple to grow the hometown lead to 13. Pace followed the score up with a three from Tray Alexander, its first basket scored in over four minutes and cut the deficit to 10 heading into the break.
Out of halftime, Tavin Pierre Philippe opened up the scoring with a clean drive to the basket. Walton then finished at the rim, plus the foul, thanks to a steal and crisp pass from Mason Jackson. The free throw swelled the Brown and Gold's lead to 16.
The strong second half defense trend continued for Adelphi as Pace was scoreless for the first five minutes of the half, but the Setters were able to bounce back. A 6-0 Panther run led to a 6-0 Pace run and the teams were back where they had started in the second period.
Eleven minutes remained in the game when Price was able to escape a full court press, toss a long pass to Rancy which led to a slam. With Pace on its heels, Rancy came back on the defensive end with a huge block before dishing the rock to Fulgencio, who buried a three and put the CRS on its feet.
Pace got the lead down from 15 to 11 and for the next eight minutes the game was a see-saw battle. The Setters continued to try and gain momentum but kept being met with stand-up defense and timely shooting from the Panthers.
2:57 remained as Pace trailed by 10 and began to apply pressure to the upset-minded 'Cats. The full court pressure cut the Adelphi lead six, but free throws from Fulgencio and Walton sealed the upset and gave the Panthers their 12th win in a row, the program's longest win streak since 2005-06.
Fulgencio led the team with 16 points on 50% shooting.
Rancy played his best game of the season, scoring a season-high 12 points while also contributing seven boards, three blocks, two steals and a team-high four assists.
The Adelphi men's basketball team will return to the court on Wednesday, January 22 when they travel to SCSU at 7:30 pm.
