Volleyball Overcomes Bridgeport to Secure 3-1 Victory

Garden City, N.Y. - After dropping the opening set, the Adelphi University volleyball team clawed its way back to take a four-set victory from the University of Bridgeport on Monday evening, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.

The Panthers (9-6) relied heavily on three different offensive threats in Delaney Kiendra, Macarty McQueen and Noelle Alberda, who each tallied double-digit kills in the win. Kiendra led the charge with 16, which stands as a season-high for the senior out of Murrieta, California. Pacing the offense once again was four-time Northeast-10 Conference Setter of the Week, Kambel Fiser, who set a new season-best mark of 53 assists.

With her first dig in the first set, Jaydin Nowak reached a career milestone of 1,000 digs, as she accounted for 21 in the match.

The Purple Knights trailed by four midway through the opener, but stormed back with a 9-2 run to take their first lead of the contest. Despite tying the game several times down the stretch, Bridgeport closed out the narrow victory to move to 1-0 in the game.

Adelphi found its stride in set two, after trailing by two, Kalena Ricketts put down back-to-back kills to make it 14-13. Kiendra found the floor on three consecutive attempts to push away from the Purple Knights en route to the home team closing out a 25-20 victory.

In the third set, neither team put together a run of three or more points at any given time, however it was Adelphi that won the final three points courtesy of kills from Kiendra and Madeleine Chaapel

Bridgeport seemed in command of the fourth frame after jumping out to a 7-0 advantage before giving up a point due to a service error. Slowly but surely the Panthers chipped away at the Purple Knight advantage, using a 6-1 run to knot the score at 10-all. Kiendra's kill at 12-12 sparked a six point run that allowed Adelphi to pull away from their opponent.

Alberda and McQueen both recorded kills that saw the hosts with match point, however Bridgeport attempted to stage the comeback with three straight points of their own to come within two. It was Kiendra who got the last word, slamming it home to give Adelphi its fourth straight win.

The Panthers are back in action this weekend when they open up Northeast-10 Conference play against American International College on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the home of the Yellow Jackets. Opening serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
