Garden City, N.Y. - Despite rainy conditions throughout the day, there was plenty to celebrate as the Adelphi men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 conference win over the Saint Michael's Purple Knights.
With alumni on hand celebrating the 70th anniversary of the program and campus festivities underway for Spirit Weekend, the Panthers (5-2-1, NE10 2-0) move to 11-0 all-time versus the Purple Knights.Â
Possession was the name of the game for the Panthers as they had the ball for nearly the entire game.
The 'Cats opened up the scoring in the 21st minute when Rory Duggan footed a perfect ball to junior Gonzalo Gil, who sent a strike to the back of the net.
The Brown and Gold kept the offense going and threatened to extend their lead with two separate tries at the net from Luca Boast.Â
In the 39th minute, the Purple Knights had back to back corner kicks looking to generate some offense. However, the Panther defense stood strong and kept the visitors off the board.Â
Freshman Jad Abbas made his collegiate debut for the 'Cats just before heading into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead that they would hold until the final horn.Â
To start the second half, the 'Cats came out flying. Early on, Gil sent a ball towards the net that was deflected off the crossbar. The ensuing corner would result in another excellent chance for Gil, but his header would be stopped by the Saint Michael's goalkeeper.
Victor Castel kept the pressure turned up for Adelphi in the 62nd minute, sending a shot on goal that was ultimately saved.Â
In the last 20 minutes of the contest, the Purple Knights made several offensive pushes trying to get on the board. Sophomore keeper Santiago Arango would keep the home team on top, securing the first clean sheet of his career and giving the Panthers the win.Â
Adelphi ended the game dominating the stat sheet in shots with a margin of 15-4. Saint Michael's was unable to muster a single shot on gaol.
Head coach Gary Book and the Panthers have won three straight and are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they head to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International at 3 p.m.
