Manchester, N.H. — Head coach Gary Book and the Adelphi men's soccer team traveled up to Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon to kick off Northeast-10 play.
It rained throughout the entire game and early on both teams were just looking to find their footing.
Saint Anselm had the first few shots of the day, but Santiago Arango made a pair of nice saves to keep it scoreless.
The early barrage by the Hawks seemed to wake up the Panthers as they quickly went on the attack. In the 20th minute, Rory Duggan was sprung free but stoned by the keeper. Thankfully for Adelphi, Gonzalo Gil was all over the rebound and buried in the back of the net to put the 'Cats up 1-0.
The Panthers would look to keep the pressure on, but the Hawks would respond quickly, tying the game just seven minutes later.
While Saint Anselm was celebrating, the defense seemed to not get into the correct position and Adelphi was all over it. Immediately after the opposition's goal, the Panthers attacked as Gil would send a pass to captain Victor Castel who would regain the lead just 30 seconds after it was lost.
Adelphi would keep applying the pressure and in the 29th minute, a cross from Tyler Dwyer would get punched out by the keeper, but land at the feet of Richard DeBrosse. DeBrosse would get around the Hawks' goalkeeper and score his third goal of the season to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
The Brown and Gold had gained complete control of the game and would not let it up for the 60 remaining minutes. Adelphi continued to be the better team and in the second half, outshot Saint Anselm 11-3. The Hawks had trouble creating any offense and the Panthers would take a 3-1 victory home, moving them to 1-0 in conference play.
Adelphi would finish the day with a season high 24 shots, 13 of them on net. The Panthers held an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Adelphi men's soccer team will return to the pitch on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Molloy for Youth Soccer Night.
