Issing's Late Goal Propels Women's Soccer to First Conference Win

New Haven, Conn. — The Adelphi women's soccer team headed to Southern Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon to begin Northeast-10 play.

The first half of was very tightly contested as Madison Apicella and Kayleigh Goodrich would threaten in the first twenty minutes. While both teams had multiple shots in the period, neither were able to put together a true scoring chance and the game remained tied at zero at the break.

The beginning of the second half was more of the same. Adelphi would continue its suffocating defense and push up the field but could not break through. It was starting to look like the game may end in a scoreless draw until the Panthers pounced in the 70th minute.

Peyton DeRouen would send a goal kick down the right side of the field to Alexa Piotrowski. Piotrowski, like she has done all season, sent a beautiful cross into the middle of the field to the feet of Goodrich.

The sophomore would pass the ball to Carly Issing who took one touch and ripped a shot that snuck past the Owls' keeper and gave Adelphi the lead.

The 'Cats then had 20 minutes to protect the lead and that's exactly what they did. Stout defense by the back line and some clutch saves by DeRouen would keep Southern Connecticut State scoreless and bring home a 1-0 victory.

DeRouen would finish the game with a season-high nine saves and her third clean sheet of the season.

Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will return to the field on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they just New Haven for Youth Soccer Night.
