Manchester, N.H. - Capped off by a Lana Mignon de Wet goal in the final minute, the Adelphi University field hockey team prevailed over No. 9 Saint Anselm College on Friday afternoon, by a final score of 3-2.
Given a penalty corner with 32 seconds to play, the Panthers'
Ali Nagy inserted the ball to de Wet, who fired the feed through the mass of bodies at the net. Aided by a screen from
Caroline Beakes, the ball rolled past home goalkeeper Sidney Falterer to effectively put the game out of reach with just 25 seconds to play.
Coming into the day 0-4, Adelphi started off the contest on the offensive. Two saves from Falterer out of three shots however squashed the initial momentum. In the middle part of the period, the Hawks dominated the penalty corner advantage, one that they would win 21-4 over the course of the game.
de Wet would break the ice on scoring towards the end of the frame, sailing the ball past Falterer from 30 feet out, giving the 'Cats their first edge on the afternoon.
The second set of 15 saw a different tune from the Hawks, registering an astonishing seven shots and four penalty corners through the first six minutes. As a stalemate ensued, Saint A's had one more run with around 30 seconds until the break. As a ball got deflected by Meghan Smith, the hosts' Marissa Politano found another redirection that snuck past the Brown and Gold's
Tayla Szmak to even up the scoring.
It was the 'Cats who looked to flip the script coming out for the third quarter. As de Wet came down the right side with just over a minute elapsed,
Jillian Riche crossed her pass once more after baiting the goalie to
Emiline Biggin, who found herself with a nearly wide open net to put Adelphi back in front 2-1.
As the frame continued, and more shots and penalty corners began to pile up for the Hawks, the defense and Szmak refused to let any ball cross the dreaded line. Szmak's four saves on the period proved vital, as the score remained the same heading into the fourth.
With the game continuing to change paces in either direction, Saint Anselm replicated their second quarter efforts, increasing their opportunities in the offensive zone. After being granted a penalty stroke due to a Panther hitting the ball without her stick, it was Laurentien ver der Akker who took advantage to knot up the score one more time.
Both sides found their offensive chances, but an additonal five saves from Szmak halted those efforts for the home team. The final three minutes proved to be all Panthers, with four shots generated off of two penalty corners, including de Wet's game winner.
As if it weren't enough, de Wet then snatched the ball with 13 seconds to play, leading the 'Cats to their first win of 2024 against a nationally-ranked opponent.
Szmak finished with 17 saves, a new career-high.
Kylie Peregoy was also credited three defensive saves, a new single-game high for her career as well. de Wet finished with four points, with Biggin close behind with her three.
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and Adelphi will return to Garden City on Sunday (Sept. 22) when they take on No. 3 East Stroudsburg University at Motamed Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
