Garden City, N.Y. - In a tumultuous Sunday matinee affair, the Adelphi University field hockey team dropped its game against No. 3 East Stroudsburg University by a final score of 5-4 at Motamed Field.
Off a penalty corner with just over three minutes to play, Kayla Minkon delivered the game-winner past
Tayla Szmak to lift the Warriors over the home team. The goal was her first on the season, coming at the most important time.
Scoring was a trend at the conclusion and the start of the day, as the Panthers were firing shots off just past a minute into the contest. In a tic-tac-toe type play,
Ali Nagy sent a feed down to
Jillian Riche who crossed the ball after baiting the ESU goalkeeper, leaving a tap-in for
Amanda Lee to light up the scoreboard first.
Less than two minutes later, Kayla Minkon sent a ball towards the net with Allyson Forman ready for the deflection, hitting the post and taking a Warrior bounce into the net to even up the score. The two sides would go back and forth the remainder of the period, creating the most even-played frame of the afternoon, as the shot discrepancy ended 7-5 in favor of East Stroudsburg.
17 was the magic number in the second set of 15, as that's the amount of shots the visitors were able to generate in their zone, with Szmak eventually saving eight of them herself. ESU was able to capitalize off a couple, with Bella Viruet taking advantage of a scramble at the net to get the Black and Red their third on the day.
Their next however, would come in the form of a penalty stroke. Forman was selected as the weapon of choice, as she shot her sixth goal of the season through the net to get the Warriors' fourth.
Lana Mignon de Wet then continued her superhuman-like streak. After weaving past the defense on her own, collecting her own rebound and sending a bullet 15 yards to the goal, she had netted her fifth of the season before the halftime buzzer.
Just like the start of the first half, Adelphi was granted a couple penalty corners within the first two minutes. After Nagy entered the latter,
Emiline Biggin found de Wet who used her power once more from the top of the circle to knot up the game at three apiece.
East Stroudsburg had another high-octane quarter in terms of shots, with the third frame seeing 11. Despite this, the Panther defense was able to stop nine before Szmak needed to get involved. Even with four coming in the final two minutes, the score remained deadlocked heading into the final quarter.
In the most drama-filled quarter, it was the visitors who struck first. In another mass of bodies at the net, Minke Kijin took Viruet's rebound and put the Warriors back on top 5-4 with under 10 minutes to play.
Not to be outdone, the deflection game continued for the Panthers. With de Wet sending another towards new goalkeeper Sydney Pope, it was Nagy who tipped it at just the right time to tally the Brown and Gold's fourth and tie the game once more.
After Minkon scored the Warriors' fifth, the final three minutes showed some extra urgency from the 'Cats. Their best chance came with under 30 seconds, when
Jillian Riche shot a ball wide, but it was too little too late for the Brown and Gold.
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and Adelphi will be back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 25) when they take on nearby conference foe Pace University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. from Motamed Field.
