Men's Soccer Bounces Back With 3-1 Victory Over #13 Gannon

Erie, Pa. — Head coach Gary Book and the Adelphi men's soccer team played the first of two road games this week when they traveled up to nationally ranked Gannon University on Tuesday afternoon.

There was not much happening for the Panthers early on as both teams traded throw ins and free kicks in the first fifteen minutes. Gannon was outshooting Adelphi 3-0, but the 'Cats struck first when Gonzalo Gil got behind the Knights' defense on a throw in to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.

While Gannon tried to apply pressure to tie the game up, the Panthers stood their ground and did not allow their opponents any real chances. In the 37th minute, a pass from Pablo Ablanedo would spring Matthew Murphy free who collected the ball and unleashed a beautiful shot that found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal. Adelphi would take a 2-0 lead into the half.

Much like the beginning of the game, the early stages of the second half did not have much going on. There were more throw ins and free kicks as the teams tried to gain a competitive edge. Neither Adelphi or Gannon had a true scoring chance until the 63rd minute.

An errant pass from a Gannon midfielder would send the ball to Victor Castel who flicked the ball perfectly to Richard DeBrosse. DeBrosse would sneak by two Knights defenders and fire the ball past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season and a 3-0 Panther lead.

From there, the 'Cats would park the bus and counter-attack. The Panthers were able to stave off anything Gannon attempted until the 88th minute when they were able to break through. It would be too little too late for the home team, however, as Adelphi would come out on top 3-1 and grab its second win of the season.

Santiago Arango made a career-high six saves while also facing a career-high 14 shots.

The Panthers will return to the pitch on Saturday at noon when they kick off conference play at Saint Anselm.
