Field Hockey Falls In Back and Forth Contest with Slippery Rock; 5-4

Garden City, N.Y. - In a Sunday matinee that saw five goals in the fourth quarter, the Adelphi University field hockey team dropped its game against Slippery Rock at Motamed Field by a final score of 5-4.

After scoring with under two minutes to go courtesy of Ali Nagy, the final 100 seconds proved to be nothing short of a thriller. As the 'Cats came driving down in the final 30 seconds, they were awarded a penalty corner with just eight seconds to play. A violation from the visitors' enabled a timeless possession after time expired, meaning the game would not end until Slippery Rock got the ball out of the semi-circle.

Following two timeless corners, both shots taken by Adelphi were blocked by The Rock defense, resulting in the final whistle.

It was the Panthers' who started the game off controlling the pace, holding the ball in Slippery Rock's zone for the first three minutes and change. The Green and White struggled to find their own rhythm offensively until their first penalty corner was issued over halfway into the period. Then, The Rock's Leslie Colliver got the pass back after inserting and put it home to open up the day's scoring.

After Amanda Lee was hit illegally in the zone, the referees shortly after awarded a penalty stroke to the 'Cats. Lana Mignon de Wet was the shooter of choice, who snuck the ball in despite Rock's goalkeeper getting a piece to tie the contest at one before the first 15 minutes came to a close.

The second frame saw more offensive opportunities for each side, as both squads were awarded penalty corners within the first three minutes. After Nagy inserted the one for the Brown and Gold, Sydney Rossacci found herself with a clear shot that made its way past the goalkeeper. However, Christina Clymer's stick was there to stop the roller and keep the battle knotted up.

With under five minutes before the break, the Panthers lined up for another corner after Lee's shot on goal was stopped. This time, after Lee fired it back in towards the goal, Caroline Beakes had the deflection to startle the defense and put the 'Cats back on top 2-1 before the halftime buzzer.

Not to be outdone on holding your breath, Slippery Rock started the second half with a shot of their own that went past Tayla Szmak. It was graduate student Darcie Wallace though who acted as the last line of defense this time, giving the Motamed Field crowd a good gasp.

After seven shots combined in the third quarter, the last one was the most crucial for The Rock. Gianna Conti took the fast feed from Bailee Christman that shot past Szmak and locked up the game once more before the third horn.

The final set of 15 proved to be the culmination of the shot-heavy previous three. Slippery Rock finally found their groove, with Feli Stockler giving the visitors their first lead of the contest early on.

Four minutes later, Conti connected once more to double the lead, for the first two-goal separation of the game. Less than a minute later, Beakes also found her second, weaving around the goalie to give the Panthers some life.

Once Slippery Rock found their fifth of the day and third of the frame, the home team began to play with some urgency. Nagy's score with 1:51 to play proved to be enough to get the energy back up, but it was another case of too little, too late.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 20 when they travel to take on Saint Anselm College. Game time from Manchester, N.H. is set for 2:00 p.m.
