Campagna Departs Adelphi for Division I Iona

8/26/2024 11:00:00 AM

Garden City, N.Y. - Effective last Friday, Carla Campagna will step down as Adelphi University softball head coach, announced by Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation Danny McCabe, on Monday.

Campagna has resigned from her position to accept the head softball coach position at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y..

"Adelphi University and this softball program will always hold a special place in my heart," commented Campagna. "I'd like to thank Danny McCabe for giving me my first head coaching opportunity as I begin my next coaching chapter."

In six seasons at the helm, Campagna strengthened the East Region powerhouse softball program, returning the team to the Division II Softball National Championship in 2022, while appearing in the East Region tournament in every other season. Out of the five seasons of earning a berth, Adelphi hosted in 2022 and again in 2023 - and put up an impressive 47 wins in both campaigns.

As just the ninth head coach in program history, her record stands at 194-81 with a 96-18 clip in Northeast-10 Conference action.

In her inaugural campaign, Campagna guided the Panthers to a 32-20 record and an NE10 Southwest Division regular-season title. Adelphi reached the finals of the NE10 Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for an eighth-consecutive year that season.

The highlight of her tenure leading the Brown and Gold came in 2022, when the 'Cats hoisted their first NCAA East Regional crown since 2016 on the back of a 47-15 record. Campagna coached three NFCA First Team All-Region players that season in Courtney Wengryn and flamethrowers Claire Fon and Lindsey Hibbs. Hibbs' NE10-leading 301 strikeouts and Fon's league-leading 1.12 earned-run-average was a powerful enough 1-2 punch to send the Panthers to the Women's College World Series in Chattanooga, Tenn..

2023 saw another historic stretch, matching the program's win mark from the previous season along with more First Team All-Region showings for Hibbs and Wengryn. Hibbs' excelled to an even higher standard with an NCAA-leading 397 strikeouts en route to being named an NFCA First Team All-American. In addition, the Ontario native took home both NE10 and D2CCA National Pitcher of the Year honors. The Panthers took home the NE10 crown for a second consecutive season, not allowing a run in their two games played.

Campagna's final campaign saw the Brown and Gold clinch the No. 1 seed in the NE10 tournament for the third consecutive year, going on a stretch of 20 wins in 22 games at one point. After finishing as runner-up, Adelphi was awarded East 2 Regional hosting privileges and won their side to line up another match up with Wilmington (Del..) The rubber match didn't go their way, with the 'Cats being named NCAA East Region runner-up once more.

A national search will begin for Campagna's replacement immediately.
