Garden City, N.Y. - For the 11th time in program history, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse program will play in the Northeast-10 Conference finals, following a victory over third-seeded New Haven on Wednesday, 9-7 in semifinal action.
Despite taking three times the amount of shots in the opening quarter alone, Adelphi (16-2) was tied with the Chargers following the opening quarter. Gabby Buscemi logged four saves between the pipes for the third-seed and even held the Panthers to three goals in the second to remain tied at the break.
New Haven went up by two in the second but unassisted tallies from
Tamia Lawson and
Ashley Kolomechuk brought the game back to a stalemate once more.
Danielle Marino connected with Kolomechuk to re-gain the host lead in the third, which they did not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. It was a combination of
Jillian McFadden stops and strong defense that kept the Chargers scoreless throughout the third, as Adelphi held a 17-10 advantage in caused turnovers for the game. The home team added one more goal with under a minute to play in the third, as Marino found a cutting
Rita Sefransky to give the hosts a two-goal lead ahead of the final quarter.
The Panther attack continued to pepper shots at Buscemi, as they started off the fourth with three straight, following a draw control win from
Courtney Carollo. It took over five minutes before either team scored for the first time in the fourth, as
Marielle Colalillo found the back of the cage against her former team to stretch the Panther advantage to three.
The Chargers were held without a goal for over 30 minutes as they converted a free position - their first of the contest - at 7:57 to make it a two-goal game. Trading goals, New Haven had possession with under a minute to play but an untimely miscue returned the ball to Adelphi and ran out the clock en route to its 11th NE10 title game.
Adelphi will head to Pleasantville, N.Y. for the Championship game on Saturday, May 11 and take on top-seeded and no. 1 in Division II Pace University at noon.
