Garden City, N.Y. - The postseason journey got off on the right foot Saturday for the No. 2 seed Adelphi University women's lacrosse team, with a 21-10 rout of No. 7 seed Southern New Hampshire University in the quarterfinals of the 2024 NE10 Championship at Motamed Field.
As the Panthers (15-2) begin their pursuit of the program's first NE10 Championship since 2017, Head Coach
Pat McCabe's squad delivered offensively to the tune of 21 goals -- tying a season-high.
It is also the most goals scored in a postseason contest by the Panthers in over five years, when Adelphi exploded for 23 goals against Assumption University back on May 2, 2018.
The Brown and Gold impressively had nine different goal-scorers in Saturday's win, spearheaded by
Kelly-Ann McGrath's four tallies.
Marielle Colalillo,
Ashley Kolomechuk and
Tamia Lawson all had three.
Much of the scoring occurred in the opening 15-minute period, with the two teams combining for 12 goals (most in the game). It was a pair of SNHU turnovers, coupled with Lawson's man-up goal, that slung Adelphi out to an early 6-2 lead in the first quarter.
The fiery-hot Adelphi attack kept their foot on the gas pedal all half and fired off four unanswered goals to start the second quarter.
The game eventually reached running time in the second half, after McGrath collected her game-high third and fourth goals of the contest.Â
Both teams went toe-to-toe on the draw, with Adelphi maintaining a slight 19-16 advantage over SNHU.
Courtney Carollo set the tone with her seven draw control victories. In addition to her four points (2 g, 2 a),
Danielle Marino led all players with three caused turnovers.
Adelphi will next host third-seeded University of New Haven -- following a close regular-season meeting decided by three goals only ten days ago -- on Wednesday (May 8) in the semifinals of the 2024 NE10 Championship at Motamed Field.
