Flushing, N.Y. - For just the second time in program history, the No. 5 seed Adelphi University women's tennis team has triumphed in the NCAA Tournament, following Friday's 4-0 win over No. 4 seed University of the District of Columbia at the QC Tennis Bubble in Flushing.
The result sends the 'Cats into a winner-take-all match tomorrow (May 11) at 3 p.m. against No. 1 seed Queens College for the right to represent half of the East Region at the 2024 NCAA Division II National Championship in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Panthers (12-5) were in a favorable spot early, as a shorthanded UDC lineup caused the Firebirds (13-8) to have to forfeit No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
The pair of
Katarina Liedbeck and
Roisin Boyd took care of the rest, in sending the Panthers to their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2017.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas, who was on the last Adelphi team to emerge victorious in the NCAA Tournament, had the following to say about her team's effort: "I'm happy with the performance of the team today. We had a tough loss earlier this spring to UDC, so we knew the level we had to bring to the match."
Liedbeck and Boyd first put a lid on the doubles point, after winning 6-2 at the No. 1 flight. The reigning ITA East Region Women's Doubles Champions then went to work in singles and lost only a combined seven games between the two of them.
In No. 1 singles, Liedbeck was nearly unbeatable, prevailing 6-0, 6-1. Boyd's 6-3, 6-3 scoreline cemented victory for the Brown and Gold.
"I'm extremely proud of the team's hard work, effort and energy we've been able to represent today. We really wanted this win to prove that we're still a top contender, and we're not done yet," said Liedbeck.
"It was a solid team effort. We're looking forward to another battle tomorrow in the final stage of the regional tournament," Fakas concluded.
