Women's Tennis' NCAA Dream Ends at Queens, 4-0

Flushing, N.Y. - Facing the top seed in the East Region twenty-four hours later, the No. 5 Adelphi University women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Queens College Saturday afternoon at the QC Tennis Bubble.

The loss caps a historic run for the Panthers (12-6), who won the program's fourth NE10 Championship all-time back in the fall, and fell a win short of advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championship.

"I'm so proud of the team for all of their accomplishments this season, both on and off the court. It was a great year for the women, winning the NE10 title and making it to the final round of NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2017. It was a pleasure coaching this group and I look forward to continuing to build on this success in the future," said Head Coach Rebecca Fakas.

A nationally-ranked group and the No. 1 leading team in the East Region, Queens (14-4) overwhelmed the 'Cats in doubles.

The respective No. 1 and No. 3 pairings of Maja Makal and Saga Berggren, and Ana Tarbujaru and Kyra Bergmann lost only one game between the two of them.

As the match proceeded into singles competition, Berggren first took down Elisabeth Seyfarth, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.

Caterina Federici lost by the same scoreline at No. 4 singles, and Carolina Chaves -- in what became her final match in an Adelphi uniform -- dropped a 6-1, 6-3 contest at No. 5.

This concludes the 2023-24 campaign for the Adelphi University women's tennis team. Stay tuned to AUPanthers.com for updates regarding the coming fall season.
