Springfield, Mass. - Heating up in conference play, the Adelphi University softball team completed a sweep of American International College in its doubleheader Sunday in Springfield.
Now winners of eight consecutive games, the Panthers (15-15) are back to .500 and won their last six conference games.Â
Game 1: Adelphi 8, AIC 2
In a game with ten combined runs, the Brown and Gold were held hitless through the first two innings. The 'Cats opened up a 2-0 advantage in the third, thanks to a
Jordyn Pasqueralli single and a
Kaitlyn Klepper double.Â
Lindsey Hibbs commanded the strike zone throughout the afternoon, fanning six out of her first seven batters faced. The Ontario native later extended that to eleven strikeouts by the end of the fifth frame, only allowing two hits in the process.
Pasqueralli was in the thick of it again in the fourth, when a throwing error that allowed the second-year outfielder to reach plated two more runs, extending Adelphi's lead to 4-0.
The 'Cats piled it on in the seventh, with
Angela Lignelli,
Ellen Tarjan, and
Faith Camilleri helping to double the lead from four to eight. The Yellow Jackets put together four hits in the final inning, along with two runs, but Hibbs striking out her 12th and 13th batter ended the matinee.Â
Game 2: Adelphi 10, AIC 2 (F/5)
The visitors didn't wait as long to get things going in the nightcap. A double from Pasqueralli, followed by a
Courtney Wengryn triple gave the 'Cats an early three-run edge.Â
The road team really didn't let up early on.
Courtney Murphy's double and Camilleri's two-run home run in back-to-back innings in the second and third upped the AIC deficit to six.Â
Zee Zee Shreter, Camilleri, and Klepper all drove in another run to put double digits on the scoreboard after four frames. Despite giving up an RBI single in the opening inning, starter
Lily Kenney later settled in, retiring nine of her next ten batters.Â
AIC was able to score its second run, after Pasqueralli fumbled a single that cut through the middle of the infield in the fifth. Kenney was able to earn her fifth win of the season with a final line of one earned run and seven hits on 67 pitches.Â
Head Coach
Carla Campagna and the Panthers will take another quick trip on Tuesday (Apr. 9,), when they square off against Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y.. Game time is set for 2 p.m.Â
