Pleasantville, N.Y. - In a tale of two halves, the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader with Pace University on Tuesday afternoon.
With their eight-game win streak snapped in the matinee, the Panthers (16-16) remain at .500 and go to 5-3 in NE10 play. The contests ended by the final scores of 5-1 and 7-4.
Game 1: Adelphi 1, Pace 5
It took a little bit to get anything going to start the day, as neither team got a hit through the first five half innings.Â
The bottom of the third started with a crucial play that would set the tone for the afternoon. On a single through the middle,
Jordyn Pasqueralli let the ball go through her legs attempting to field, turning what would've been a single into a triple. An immediate bloop single just over the head of second baseman
Angelina Kellogg put the Setters on top.Â
An eerily similar play would follow for the Brown and Gold, putting one in the run column. After
Faith Camilleri's double,
Kendall Winn's bloop single on the other side of the infield tied the ballgame at 1-all.
Lindsey Hibbs did all she could to contain the home team, but the bottom half of the sixth proved to be too much. A throwing error from
Jaden Farhat at third put two runners in scoring position. Pace's Riley Jenkins singled up the middle, bringing home two runs and giving the Setters the lead.Â
More insurance aided by a wild pitch increased the margin to 5-1, which the 'Cats were unable to overcome in the seventh.Â
Game 2: Adelphi 7, Pace 4
The trend that ended Game 1 seemed to carry over into the start of the nightcap. After a wild pitch put
Zee Zee Shreter on third in the opening frame,
Courtney Wengryn reaching on an error at first base broke the ice.Â
Lily Kenney once again found herself a rhythm in the circle. After putting runners at first and second with one out, a timely double play ended the first frame. It took until the third for Pace to get on the board themselves. A pair of singles scored the next run, tying the game by the end of three.
To start the fourth frame, Jenkins took the first pitch she saw and towered it over the head of left-fielder
Courtney Murphy's head and over the fence. This knock was the second of the sophomore's season and gave the home team the advantage once more.Â
In the following inning, the Panthers truly sprouted back to life. Singles from Pasqueralli and Camilleri, along with a sacrifice fly from Wengryn, scored three runs for the Brown and Gold, putting them up two. Facing a 1-2 count, Winn then smacked her pitch to nearly the same spot as her opponent just an inning prior, scoring an additional three and putting the 'Cats up 7-2.Â
Kenney, as usual, had no problems getting things under control, retiring seven consecutive batters leading into the seventh. After getting the first two outs, a multitude of walks and singles allowed Pace to bring home two more. With the hosts threatening for more, a lineout to Pasqueralli gave Adelphi the victory.Â
Head Coach
Carla Campagna and the Panthers will now return home for a six-game homestand. First up is Bentley University on Saturday (Apr. 13) at 12 noon.Â
