Softball Earns Two Key Conference Wins Over Saint Rose

Garden City, N.Y. - In an unexpected home game due to weather, the Adelphi University softball team swept both legs of its doubleheader with The College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field, by the scores of 7-1 and 8-1.

Originally supposed to take place in Albany, a winter weather pattern changed the site to Garden City at the last minute. The Panthers played as the away team and batted first.

Game 1: Adelphi 7, Saint Rose 1
In a game with early ignition, the Brown and Gold earned a quick five runs in the opening frame. Two singles from Jordyn Pasqueralli and Jaden Farhat started the run, and the burst was capped by Faith Camilleri's three-run shot that the wind carried over the left-field fence.

Lindsey Hibbs established her dominance throughout the contest, not allowing a hit through the first five innings. Zee Zee Shreter and Courtney Murphy brought home some insurance runs in the sixth off another pair of singles.

An initial single broke up the no-no in the bottom half. A subsequent deep double to right-center field put the Golden Knights on the board for the first time all day.

Two strikeouts to close out Game 1 added to the 13 total of Hibbs' performance for a 'Cats victory in the matinee.

Game 2: Adelphi 8, Saint Rose 1
Errors described this one early and often. An error in right field put Shreter on third base as the leadoff batter, with Murphy grounding out to bring her home and give the Brown and Gold an early advantage.

A similar unfortunate sequence followed in the third. The ball bouncing away from the second basemen on a routine grounder by Pasqueralli brought home two runs.

The Golden Knights were unable to get more than one baserunner in an inning through four, with starter Lily Kenney able to retire the side before most got in scoring position. A deep double to center had the infield playing safer, but momentum was once again thwarted.

Insurance came once more in the fifth, with Murphy tripling into the left-center gap, scoring Shreter once more. A deep shot by Saint Rose's Nayana DeAmelia finally broke the ice for the Albany-based team in the home half.

Two more runs came home after Shreter's triple down the left-field line. Pasqueralli then earned her third RBI of the day, with her single bringing home Shreter.

Kenney closed out strong, as she struck out her fourth of the contest for the first out of the inning. To end the game, Kenney deflected a comebacker that conveniently ended up in front of newcomer Kaitlyn Klepper's glove, catching the ball and doubling off the runner at first to earn the sweep.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers will now hit the road tomorrow (Apr. 7), when they head to Springfield, Mass. to square off with American International College. Game time is set 1:00 p.m.
