Garden City, N.Y. - In a pivotal non-conference matchup, the no. 3 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program ran up the score on RV Mercy University on Saturday, taking a 19-3 decision on Motamed Field.
The Mavericks came to Garden City following a narrow 12-11 double overtime loss against the no. 1 team in Division II and defending National Champion Pace University on Wednesday.
Alexandra Leggio led the Cats (9-1) with a career-high seven points, chipping in five helpers as eight different players scored in the regional contest.
Ashley Kolomechuk recorded her first six-point game of her career, following up her five goal performance with four tallies and two assists.
All-time, Adelphi is now 5-0 against Mercy, who are led by two-time national champion and Adelphi alum, Dawn Sachs (Anselmin).
Mercy (4-8) scored the opening goal at 12:30 in the first but were stunned in their defensive end when the home team rattled off seven straight to make it a six-goal advantage. In that stretch Leggio assisted three goals, including a pair from first year
Ashley Kolomechuk.
Adelphi continued its offensive onslaught deep into the second quarter when they scored seven more goals without a response from the visiting Mavericks. Comparatively, the home team took 14 shots in the second to Mercy's three; one of which landed on goal and was stopped by netminder
Jillian McFadden.
Nearly 30 minutes went by before Mercy found the back of the cage to start the scoring in the third but the Brown and Gold tacked on three more leading into the fourth.
Rita Sefransky,
Danielle Marino and
Alison Turner all danced around the defenders to score unassisted and extend the lead to 15.
Both of Adelphi's shots in the fourth landed on goal and found a way past Olivia Lamonica, including a dart form
Kelly-Ann McGrath. Earlier in the contest, Mcgrath notched her 100th career point at 13:46 in the second.
Saturday's win marks the fifth game this season that the Cats have put the pressure on offensively to force running time with a 10-goal margin. In all, Adelphi held a 40-11 advantage in shots with a perfect 19-for-19 clip in clear attempts.
The Panthers will host the defending Division II Champion Pace University Setters on Wednesday in an NE10 regular season meeting. Opening draw is set for 5:00 p.m.
