Garden City, N.Y. - In a game that saw highs and lows for either side, the no. 3 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program suffered its first Northeast-10 Conference loss to defending National Champion Pace University on Wednesday, by a narrow, one-goal decision, 12-11.
Adelphi (9-2, 5-1 NE10) came out strong in the opening quarter, using back-to-back tallies from
Alexandra Leggio to push the margin to three before the frame came to a close. In that stretch, the home team were winners of five draw controls compared to Pace's one, which proved to be the difference-maker.
Flipping the script quickly, the Setters (11-0, 5-0 NE10) scored three unanswered in the second to even the game at four-all with 7:38 on the board.
Danielle Marino scored one of her four goals in the matchup to return the lead to Adelphi's favor, however Sydney Juvelier netted the equalizer to break for halftime stuck at 5-5.
The floodgates opened in the third and once again Pace found themselves in the lead - putting the home team back by three goals. Ashely Kolomechuk, Leggio and
Kelly-Ann McGrath both took shots on the cage, but netminder Samantha Tanguay kept the hosts scoreless for the remainder of the quarter.
Regrouping with 15 minutes left to play in regulation, the Panthers used a free position goal from Marino to start the scoring and cut into the Setter lead. Marino connected with
Kerrin Heuser on Adelphi's next two goals to bring the game back to a tie at nine goals apiece. Pace used the ensuing three and a half minutes to tack on three quick goals and push back out to an advantage.
Not going down without a fight, Adelphi continued to put a flurry of shots at Tanguay ultimately using a Kolomechuk-Leggio connection to break the drought. After a caused turnover by Heuser,
Tamia Lawson buried a shot for the home team, which left the hosts trailing by one with two minutes to play. An untimely turnover in the offensive end for the Panthers sent Pace the other way, where they used the clock differentials to run out the time and secure the victory.
Adelphi dominated the draw control circle, winning 19 with the help of 11 from graduate transfer
Courtney Carollo. The Brown and Gold also held the upper hand in shots and saves but were struck with 15 turnovers in the loss.
Marino put up a team-high six xpoints courtesy of four goals and two assists while Leggio and McGrath both recorded hat tricks. The Panther defense held Pace's leading scorer - Angelina Porcello - to her second lowest point total of the season, allowing her just two goals.
The Panthers will head to Springfield, Massachusetts for its next NE10 bout with American International on Saturday, April 13. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
