Garden City, N.Y. - With the field prepped coming off three consecutive days of steady rain, the Adelphi University softball team swept St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field.
Now winners of their last four, the Panthers (11-15) inched closer to an even-.500 winning percentage this season, after prevailing over the Spartans (16-16) by the scores of 4-1 and 7-3.
Game 1: Adelphi 4, STAC 1
A game with four errors and two hits through the game's first four innings,
Kaitlyn Klepper's lead-off double in the fifth had the 'Cats on the verge of breaking a 1-1 tie.
A sacrifice by
Ellen Tarjan moved pinch-runner
Zee Zee Shreter and
Courtney Wengryn into scoring position, with clean-up hitter
Brianna Fischer approaching the plate.
On the first offering to the reigning NE10 Rookie of the Year, Fischer laid down a squeeze, but a perfect scoop and shovel home by STAC starter Sarah Clancy nailed Shreter at home.
As
Lindsey Hibbs retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, the Panthers finally moved in front in the bottom half, and it was Shreter -- who stayed in the game to play right field -- that drove in the eventual game-winning run.
Wengryn followed with a two-RBI double into the left-center field gap that broke the game open, sending the Brown and Gold to a Game 1 victory.
Game 2: Adelphi 7, STAC 3
For the second time in her career,
Jordyn Pasqueralli rounded the bases for an inside-the-park homer.
After debuting at home with an inside-the-park grand slam as a freshman in 2023, Pasqueralli's first at-bat in the nightcap gave way to another trip around the bases. Behind in the count, Pasqueralli lined a pitch the opposite way that sailed beyond the reach of STAC left-fielder Nayah Diaz and rolled into the left-field corner, allowing the second-year outfielder to glide around the diamond.
Already leading 2-0, the Panthers added four more runs to their lead in the second, courtesy of three RBI knocks by
Angela Lignelli,
Courtney Murphy and Pasqueralli. Through two frames, the hosts had already built up a commanding 6-0 advantage.
A bases-clearing triple against Adelphi starter
Lily Kenney cut the Brown and Gold's lead in half, before
Carla Campagna summoned
Lindsey Hibbs out of the bullpen.
Hibbs proceeded to mow down the Spartans to earn her second win of the day. She faced only two over the minimum through four innings of relief and struck out the side -- all via the swinging strike -- in the top of the fifth.
Campagna and the Panthers will return to Janet L. Ficke Field on Saturday (Apr. 6), when they host The College of Saint Rose at 1 p.m. As the games were originally scheduled to be played in Albany, the Panthers will act as the visiting team on the scoreboard for both games of the doubleheader.
