Softball's Win Streak Snapped In Battle With SNHU; 3-2, 2-1

Manchester, N.H. - Snapping its 14-game winning streak, the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire University on Friday afternoon as the team plays its final weekend of regular season contests.

With this split, the Panthers (29-17, 16-4 NE10) have now put themselves in a win-and-clinch situation tomorrow, as a victory in either game will secure the No. 1 seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference tournament.

Game 1: Adelphi 3, SNHU 2
In a series with massive implications on conference tournament seeding, both squads were held without a hit for the first two innings. The second and third frames however provided plenty of high pressure moments.

The 'Cats loaded the bases in both frames, capped by a pair of two-out walks from Brianna Fischer and Kaitlyn Klepper. A flyout from Jaden Farhat and strikeout from Faith Camilleri held the visitors scoreless heading into the bottom half of the third.

After putting together four strikeouts within the first couple innings, starter Lindsey Hibbs began to look like her usual self. In the third though, the Penmen put a runner just 60 feet from the plate with one out. SNHU's Ari Ferrier then smacked a ball beyond the center field fence to give the home team their first two runs of the day.

Looking to put together some momentum late, Zee Zee Shreter and Jordyn Pasqueralli found themselves on second and third base in the fifth inning with just one out. Courtney Wengryn then carried a ball out to right field, good enough for three bags to tie up the ballgame. Klepper then concluded the inning with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Wengryn and giving the Brown and Gold their first lead of the afternoon.

Hitting a leadoff single in the home half of the seventh, pinch runner Grace Jenkins stood as the tying run with no outs. The next batter, Bella Dickinson, then hit a high foul ball in the backstop, caught by Angela Lignelli. Jenkins then took off to second, with Lignelli firing down the line to Fischer, ready to tag the runner for the second out of the inning.

The final batter, Alyssa DiMauro, was struck out by Hibbs for her 11th strikeout to end the matinee. The Ontario native's final line showed two earned runs on four hits and a walk.

Game 2: Adelphi 1, SNHU 2
With the nightcap showing more of a defensive slug-fest, the second game of the day proved to be one made up of almost's at the start. Both teams went down 1-2-3 to begin, combining for just one hit through the first two frames.

In the third inning, Farhat got the first hit for the 'Cats, with Courtney Murphy landing another single to put runners at the corners with two outs. A subsequent lineout from Pasqueralli kept zeroes on the scoreboard.

Starter Lily Kenney continued to find a stride as the contest progressed, allowing just two hits through five innings. In the fourth, a timely double play erased the damage of a one out single from the Penmen.

Pinch runner Angelina Kellogg entered the game following a one out walk from Kendall Winn in the fifth. After a sacrifice bunt and a steal put her on third, Shreter came up to the plate in a huge spot. After a dribbler to the pitcher forced a throwing error that plated Kellog, giving the Brown and Gold the first score of the nightcap.

Southern New Hampshire put together a walk and a single to start the sixth, which prompted a move in the circle from Head Coach Carla Campagna. Tori Parente then came on in relief for her fourth appearance of her rookie campaign. The Franklin Square, N.Y. native then walked her first batter, hitting the next two by pitch, scoring the tying run for the home team. Following a strikeout, a two out single from the Penmen's Mackenzie Bruggeman then put them on top 2-1.

Despite getting some strong contact on some pitches in the top of the seventh, Adelphi went down 1-2-3 to secure the split.

Campagna and the Panthers will wrap up the regular season tomorrow (Apr. 27), when they travel to take on Saint Anselm College. First pitch is set for noon.
