Softball Clinches No. 1 Seed in NE10 Tournament After Split at Saint Anselm; 4-1, 4-3

Manchester, N.H. - After a dramatic nightcap walk-off, the Adelphi University softball team split its doubleheader against Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon.

With a win in the matinee, the Panthers (30-18, 17-5 NE10) have clinched a share of the NE10 regular-season championship. In addition, the 'Cats will host the NE10 Tournament for the third-consecutive year, emerging victorious in the previous two.

Game 1: Adelphi 4, Saint Anselm 1
In a game with six errors, baserunning proved to be a key. After Zee Zee Shreter's two consecutive steals to start the first, a sacrifice fly from Jordyn Pasqueralli gave the Brown and Gold an early advantage. Despite putting another runner at third following Faith Camilleri's double in the second, two subsequent groundouts kept the score at 1-0.

The next scoring opportunity came in the fourth frame, when a sacrifice bunt from Brianna Fischer scored pinch runner Angeline Montanez all the way from first, following a throwing error to third base. Another bunt from Pasqueralli in the fifth forced a throwing error to first, scoring Shreter once more.

Starter Lindsey Hibbs kept the Hawks under control, only giving up four hits in as many innings. The strikeout was once more her method of domination, fanning 11 by the end of six. The visitors scored their third run on an error in the top half of that frame.

Saint Anselm began to put some offensive production together in the seventh, but it was a typical case of too little, too late. The final play of the game proved to be chaotic, as a double from Hannah Ramer scored the hosts' first run of the game, with the runner behind her being gunned down at home for the final out. Hibbs finished her 18th win of the season with a complete-game six-hitter.

Game 2: Adelphi 3, Saint Anselm 4
To the contrary of the matinee, Game 2 started with the pressure coming from the home team. A double and sacrifice fly scored two runs in two innings for the Hawks. The Panthers were pressing on the door, but stranding two at third in back-to-back innings led to the early deficit.

The fourth saw two more doubles for Saint Anselm, with Ava Caputo's increasing the advantage to three. The 'Cats then began to claw back in the fifth, with Pasqueralli's single bringing home Alexa Sacripante for their first run of the game.

Back-to-back extra-base hits the following inning changed the dynamics of the contest. After another double from Camilleri, Kendall Winn was ready to step up in the big moment, crushing a ball over the fence in left field to tie the game.

To start the fifth inning, Tori Parente once again came in relief, retiring her first six batters. A one-out single in the seventh gave the Hawks runners on first and second with drama in store. Sam Wiberg then came to the plate, hitting a ball over the infield to score the winning run and secure the split for the hosts.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers will now have a short break before they begin play in the NE10 Tournament on Friday (May 3) at Janet L. Ficke Field.
