West Haven, Conn. - The no. 3 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program found itself trailing by four goals early, but managed a comeback that resulted in an 11-8 victory against no. 22 New Haven on Wednesday.
With the help of four goals from
Kerrin Heuser, the Panthers (13-2, 9-1 NE10) stretch their win streak to four with one game left in the regular season. The team will lock in the no. 2 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 tournament with a victory this weekend, and host a quarterfinal matchup on May 4.
The Chargers (9-5, 6-3 NE10) wasted no time getting on the board and putting the visitors in a deficit in the early going, scoring within the first minute of action. Three of the hosts four goals in the opening quarter came by way of free position attempts, as Adelphi only got on the board with
Danielle Marino's man-up tally at 2:37 to make it 4-1.
Adelphi was responsible for a pair of goals to start the second, bringing the visiting team within one, just before the Chargers added another to stretch their lead back to two. Another two-goal swing from the Panthers courtesy of Heuser and
Kelly-Ann McGrath knotted the game at five-all with just under 10 minutes before the half.
Jillian McFadden stopped four shots in the ensuing minutes, but not before New Haven converted another free position attempt, taking a one-goal lead into the break.
A 2-1 third frame in favor of Adelphi brought the top-25 battle to a stalemate once more at 7-7 with one quarter in regulation left to play.
Tamia Lawson scored first in the fourth to give Adelphia brief advantage as New Haven's leading scorer Katie Schenk netted the equalizer at 13:33. Heuser put a shot past Gabby Buscemi as the eventual gamewinner as the visiting team tacked on two more before the frame was through.
Stealthy defense coupled with untimely turnovers for New Haven allowed Adelphi to hang on for its victory, overcoming its largest deficit of the season.
Alexandra Leggio and McGrath added the final two tallies of the contest, extending the team's win streak to four ahead of the regular season finale.
Prior to Saturday's game, the program will celebrate the 11 members of the graduating class. The ceremony is set to begin at approximately 11:30 a.m. with opening draw control set for noon.
