West Haven, Conn. - Only allowing two runs in 14 innings, the Adelphi University softball team won both legs of its doubleheader against University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon.Â
With these two wins, the Panthers (28-16, 15-3 NE10) are now winners of thirteen consecutive games and hold a two-game advantage in the conference standings heading into the final four games.Â
Game 1: Adelphi 7, New Haven 1
In a game with eight combined runs, the bats surprisingly did not come out in the early innings.
Faith Camilleri's two-out double in the second gave the Brown and Gold an initial push, but a subsequent popout from
Angela Lignelli put that to rest. Camilleri then walked in the fourth, with
Jordyn Pasqueralli's steal of third base sparking another two-out rally. This time too though, there weren't enough outs to spare, as a flyout from Lignelli sent the game to the home half.Â
Senior starter
Lindsey Hibbs continued her usual routine of locking down the opposition in the box, fanning eight and only allowing one baserunner through four innings.
The fifth inning proved to be the spot where the game was blown open. A double from
Brianna Fischer, and singles from
Zee Zee Shreter and
Courtney Murphy loaded the bases with just one out. Pasqueralli's knock up the middle brought home the first two runs of the game, with
Courtney Wengryn following that up with one through the right side that doubled the lead to four. Camilleri and Lignelli put together the sixth and seventh hits of the inning, scoring an additional two. A passed ball scored pinch-runner
Angelina Kellogg to cap off the explosive frame.Â
New Haven refused to lay down, as a double to the left-field gap scored its first run of the contest. Hibbs' struck out her 12th batter to end the matinee. Her final line consisted of one earned run and five hits on 121 pitches.Â
Game 2: Adelphi 6, New Haven 1
Sticking to the theme of the day, a quiet first four innings came to fruition again to start Game 2.
Kendall Winn's two-out double in the second proved to be the biggest initial opportunity, with a passed ball advancing her to third with two outs. A strikeout by
Jaden Farhat, however, thwarted that momentum.Â
The Panthers would once again come to life in the fifth inning, with their three hits matching the amount both teams had combined for going into the frame. On a 1-0 pitch, Winn hit her second home run in as many weeks to give the 'Cats their first lead. Shreter's double to left-center later scored Farhat to double the lead by inning's end.Â
The Chargers put the pressure back on the Brown and Gold in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with two outs, following two singles and a walk. A timely foul out caught by Murphy gave freshman starter
Lily Kenney a sigh of relief heading into the sixth.Â
In the sixth, Kellogg and Farhat added singles that brought home two big insurance runs, with a sacrifice fly from Fischer upping the cushion to five. Freshman
Kaitlyn Klepper's single down the line scored Pasqueralli in the final frame.Â
Kenney ultimately secured her tenth win of the season. She too allowed one earned run on five hits, with the newcomer throwing 78 pitches.Â
Head Coach
Carla Campagna will spend the last weekend of the regular season in the Granite State, starting with a doubleheader on Friday (Apr. 26) at Southern New Hampshire University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.Â
