Hibbs' 900th Strikeout Highlights Softball's Sweep of Caldwell; 3-0, 6-3

Garden City, N.Y. - As graduate student Lindsey Hibbs continues to separate herself inside the record books, the Adelphi University softball team picked up both legs of its doubleheader against Caldwell University on Saturday afternoon.

With these two victories, the Panthers (24-16, 13-3 NE10) have now won nine games in a row along with 17 of their last 18, having lost just one contest since March 29.

Game 1: Adelphi 3, Caldwell 0
While both teams got a hit in the opening inning, the first two frames didn't see more after that. It was starter Hibbs' day to make history once again, as her fourth strikeout in the second inning gave her an even 900 strikeouts during her illustrious career.

The Panthers threatened in the home half of the third, after two singles from Brianna Fischer and Zee Zee Shreter along with a Courtney Murphy walk loaded the bases with just one out. Jordyn Pasqueralli then hit into a fielder's choice, with the Cougars getting Fischer on the force at home. Courtney Wengryn looked to break the ice, but a groundout halted any momentum.

A deep double from Faith Camilleri in the next inning set the 'Cats up nicely. A two-out single from Angela Lignelli gave the Panthers their first run of the game. In a chaotic play towards the end of the frame, Shreter's infield single was aided by an overthrow from the third basemen to the bag, which then scored pinch runner Angelina Kellogg and Fischer to increase the margin to three runs.

A walk from Caldwell's Allison Winters was the last baserunner Hibbs allowed during the contest. The Ontario native retired her final 11 batters, three of them adding to her ten strikeouts. Hibbs' final line consisted of a one-hit complete game, along with one walk on 94 pitches for her 14th win of the season.

Game 2: Adelphi 6, Caldwell 3
In a first for this season, freshman Tori Parente walked to the circle as the starting pitcher for the nightcap, in her third appearance in the circle of 2024. Fanning her first batter, Parente managed to escape the inning after Caldwell stranded two on the basepaths. In the bottom half, another erroneous sequence led to the Brown and Gold striking first.

After fellow freshman Kaitlyn Klepper reached on an error at third base, a subsequent throwing error from the first basemen back to third scored Pasqueralli and Wengryn by the end of the play. Jaden Farhat's double that fell in right-center later scored Klepper for a three-run advantage by inning's end.

The second frame only saw more and more offense from the 'Cats. Following two early singles, another one from Klepper scored both Wengryn and Pasqueralli. Camilleri followed that up with one of her own, scoring Klepper once more to balloon the lead to six.

Parente began to settle in as the game went on, only allowing just one hit through the first five innings. With a runner standing just 60 feet away in the sixth, a sacrifice fly gave the Cougars their first run between both games.

Looking for more in the seventh, a deep double off the wall from Caldwell's Ashleigh Tavaska scored two more, cutting the deficit to just three. A subsequent groundout ended the day and completed the sweep for Adelphi. Parente finished with two earned runs on three hits along with three strikeouts in her first-ever complete game.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers now embark on an eight-game road trip, starting tomorrow (Apr. 21) at Georgian Court University. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
