Garden City, N.Y. - In a first half that saw 13 combined goals, the no. 3 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team held Franklin Pierce to two in the second half en route to a 19-6 decision on Saturday afternoon.
Tamia Lawson,
Payson Hedges and
Danielle Marino all scored four goals in the victory, with Marino leading the way with seven points. In addition to her team-leading seven, she collected three ground balls, picked up two draw controls and caused one turnover in the win.
After a game-opening goal from Hedges, the offense went quiet as the Ravens (4-10, 3-6 NE10) held off the Panther attack. Nearly 10 minutes later Hedges added her second and third goals of the game to give the home team a 3-0 lead. Franklin Pierce was held scoreless until 46 seconds remained in the frame, but Marino made sure to convert her late free position attempt to make it 4-1 Adelphi at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Goals five, six and seven were score by Lawson to get things going in the second, as the Cats managed to hold the Ravens from scoring until 7:04.
Courtney Carollo, who finished the win with nine draw controls commanded the circle to give her team offensive opportunities. Marino's back-to-back tallies made it 9-2, but it was Franklin Pierce that cut the deficit with the last two goals of the half to trail by five.
Marielle Colalillo and
Rita Sefransky connected for the first time this season which started the four goal slide for the Panthers that nearly sent them to running time. The Ravens capitalized on a man-up free position to defer the clock worries, which came near the conclusion of the third quarter when Colalillo scored her second to make it 15-5.
With time quickly running away, the Panthers still found a way to pour in four goals to the Ravens' one, winning their third straight and second to last regular season home game. Adelphi was nearly perfect in clear attempts (14-for-15) and won the draw game, 18-8.
A midweek trip to New Haven takes place for the Panthers on Wednesday, April 24 as the team wraps up the regular season slate on Saturday, April 27 when they host Southern New Hampshire on Senior Day.
