Flushing, N.Y. - In its closest match against the Knights in a decade, the Adelphi University men's tennis team lost a nailbiting 4-3 contest to Queens College in a possible postseason preview Wednesday at the QC Tennis Bubble.
Just the second dual singles loss for
Marko Jovanovic this year was the difference in the match.
Playing from behind, Jovanovic squeezed out a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak to force a decisive third set against the East Region's leading singles player, Roni Rikkonen.
With No. 1 singles as the only game left in town, Rikkonen -- in a showdown of two Top 3 regionally-ranked singles players -- took the third set, 6-3, to cement victory for Queens.
On three separate occasions though, the No. 47 nationally-ranked Panthers (9-5) rallied when trailing.
With their team behind,
Viktor Hockl (6-4, 6-2) and
Reece Farrow (6-3, 6-3) both won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Thomas Horsley fought back after losing the opening set at No. 5, triumphing 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to tie the match then at 3-all.
Only four conference matches now remain for the Panthers, who host Bentley University in an NE10 tilt Saturday (Apr. 20) at 12 p.m. in Garden City.
