Worcester, Mass. - After finding themselves down at the halftime break, the no. 3 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team used five straight goals to build a lead and hold on to a 14-12 victory over no. 21 Assumption University on Tuesday evening.
With just three games left in the regular season, Adelphi (11-2, 7-1 NE10) has rebounded from its one-goal loss to no. 1 Pace University. Tuesday's scoring saw hat trick contributions from four different players with
Alexandra Leggio and
Danielle Marino each adding an assist to finish with four points.
The Greyhounds (7-6, 4-4 NE10) put two quick goals on the board after
Tamia Lawson's free position shot was picked up by netminder Skylar Troyan, but Adelphi scored the next two to bring the score back to even. In a game of trading goals, the home team managed to extend its lead to two but Marino converted a free position attempt to cut the deficit to one at the conclusion of the opening frame.
Assumption tried to hold on to a two-goal lead throughout the second quarter, but Adelphi continued to find ways to score to keep the game within reach. Leggio scored with 3:48 left before halftime but the rest of the frame went on scoreless with the visiting team trailing by one at the break.
Down one coming out of the locker room, McGrath got things started for the Panthers, who strung together four straight goals to take a three-goal lead before three minutes had even gone by.
Alison Turner connected with Lawson in a man-up possession to make it 13-10 - an advantage the visitors held on to for the remainder of the contest. Over the next 12 minutes, both teams remained scoreless, with the Greyhounds putting in the last tally of the third frame, to cut the Panther lead to two.
Despite finishing only 4-for-9 in free position attempts, Lawson's first goal of the fourth was the final strike for Adelphi for the rest of the game. Both sides combined for 11 turnovers in the final quarter, with each receiving yellow cards but neither found another chance to score until after the one-minute mark. Assumption's Kyle Johnston found a way past
Madison Marchetta but a draw control win for McGrath all but sealed the fate of the hosts as time expired.
The team will return home to host Franklin Pierce on Saturday, April 20 as the first game of a lacrosse double-feature on Motamed Field. Opening draw control is set for noon.
