Softball Throws Two Shutouts in Sweep of SCSU; 1-0, 5-0

Garden City, N.Y. - On the backs of two stellar pitching performances, the Adelphi University softball team picked up two wins in its doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers (22-16, 13-3 NE10) have now won 15 of their last 16 games, after this set of victories over the Owls (11-19, 5-11 NE10.). All but two of those wins have come in conference play.

Game 1: Adelphi 1, SCSU 0
In a game with dueling no-hitters, SCSU hit a ball up the middle in the sixth to break up Lindsey Hibbs' no-no bid.

Then, in Adelphi's half of the sixth, Zee Zee Shreter's one-out single got the 'Cats on the board against SCSU starter Ashley Lewis.

As the game remained scoreless, freshman Kaitlyn Klepper worked a full count with Shreter on second as the go-ahead run. After the speedy newcomer beat out the grounder, Shreter used her keen field awareness to sprint home, beating a throw to the plate from first to break the ice.

Hibbs then retired the first two batters of the seventh to seemingly set up the win. The Owls had other ideas, slapping two singles together to make the crowd sweat. Southern's Spinelli then hit into a fielder's choice, with Fischer flipping the ball to her second baseman Klepper for the matinee victory.

Game 2: Adelphi 5, SCSU 0
Contrary to the first game, the nightcap saw offense come almost immediately. A bloop single from Courtney Wengryn scored Jordyn Pasqueralli from second in the bottom half of the first.

Two frames later, Klepper's single through the left side of the infield brought home Courtney Murphy, doubling the early lead for the hosts.

Freshman starter Lily Kenney took the circle for her 19th start of the season, and gave up two singles in the first two innings. The freshman then began to find her groove, retiring ten hitters in a row going into the fifth frame.

The Panthers started to break the game open in the sixth. A throwing error scored Angelina Kellogg, increasing the margin to three runs. Shreter and Murphy then lined back-to-back singles that scored two more.

Even with the road team putting a runner on second in the final inning, Kenney pitched her last two batters to contact, earning her eighth win of the season and second shutout on five hits and two strikeouts.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and Adelphi will now play across town on Thursday (Apr. 18), when they face off against Molloy University. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
