Pomona, N.Y. - Down to its final nine outs, the Adelphi University baseball team worked its way back from a five-run deficit to prevail 10-9 in dramatic fashion against Dominican University of New York Tuesday at Clover Stadium.
Now winners of four of their last five, the Panthers (15-16) sit one win back from returning to .500 ball.
It all began to fall apart when the Chargers (13-24) turned to their bullpen. Even with a five-run cushion, the Dominican relievers were unable to stop the impending bleeding.
Struggles began to plague Dominican, both on the bump and in the field.Â
A seventh-inning error started to undress the Chargers, who surrendered a two-RBI single to
James Eden with the bases loaded to close the gap to 9-7.
In the eighth, the 'Cats continued to be productive at the plate. After
Anthony Rigogliosi led off the inning with a walk and
Alec Maag moved the freshman into scoring position,Â
Joe Pellegrino lifted a base hit to left to pull the Panthers within a run.
Pellegrino eventually came across as the game-tying run that inning.
Jack Wishner beat out a double-play ball with the tying run on third, leveling the score at 9-all.
The comeback then became a reality in the ninth, once Rigogliosi drove in Eden on an 0-2 RBI single. In back-to-back plate appearances, Dominican failed to properly field a sacrifice bunt, thereby loading the bases to set the table for the freshman's heroics.
Jacob Lee took over in relief of
Bobby Molinaro and threw five superb innings of three-hit, one-run, two-walk, four-strikeout ball to earn the win.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and his Adelphi squad now begin a six-game homestand against NE10 opposition, beginning tomorrow (Apr. 17) at an early 10 a.m. start against Saint Michael's College.
