Baseball Sweeps Saint Michael's in Double Matinee; 12-7, 5-1

Garden City, N.Y. - In a re-scheduled doubleheader from Mar. 23, the Adelphi University baseball team swept Saint Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon, winning by the scores of 12-7 and 5-1 at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.

For the second time this season, the Panthers possess an over-.500 record, sporting a 17-16 mark with a 9-8 ledger in NE10 play.

Game 1: Adelphi 12, Saint Michael's 7
Making his first-ever start at home, Jake Sekinski struggled with his command, resulting in Saint Michael's unloading on the freshman for a four-run first.

As Jacob Dannenberg settled in and retired ten straight at one point upon being summoned from the bullpen, the Adelphi bats worked their way back.

After being held scoreless in their opening turn at the plate, the Brown and Gold proceeded to light up the scoreboard in each of the following seven innings.

In back-to-back innings, Albert Ramos found the gap for two doubles and three of his career-high four RBIs. With a double clutch on a possible double-play turn, James Eden legged it out safely to first, leveling what started out as a 5-0 game.

The two teams remained tied at 7-apiece, until Joe Pellegrino -- who missed a two-run homer by inches a pitch earlier -- tripled home Alec Maag as the go-ahead run. One pitch later, Michael Robinson lifted a sacrifice fly to left, making it a 9-7 game.

Although Dannenberg got a no-decision after letting up a game-tying double in the sixth, Coleton Reitan held the Purple Knights scoreless over the final 3.2 to earn the win. Reitan surrendered just one hit and struck out four, while Dannenberg fanned five.

Game 2: Adelphi 5, Saint Michael's 1
Both starting pitchers produced a tear of strikeouts to start, with Adelphi freshman Dawson Montesa striking out the side in the first, and facing the minimum through three. Montesa nearly matched his season-high of eight strikeouts, but racked up seven.

Adelphi was the first to break through, scratching across the game's first two runs in the third inning. An Eden single and a Bryan McCleary walk led off the frame, and a perfectly-placed bunt up the third-base line by Erick Duignan loaded the bases.

Greyson Pizzonia then made a hard lineout to second, before Anthony Rigogliosi worked his way back from a 1-2 count to earn a six-pitch walk that broke the stalemate. As the Panthers went station-to-station, Alec Maag drove a sacrifice fly to right, scoring McCleary and doubling Adelphi's lead in the process.

The 'Cats broke it open in the fifth. Now clinging to a one-run advantage, Adelphi again loaded the bases, leading to a three-spot that ballooned the Brown and Gold's lead to 5-1. Pellegrino, who is now hitting a shade below .400, first hit a grounder to the third-base side. As Richard Gilboy stepped on third for the force and threw home to attempt to double off Pizzonia, Saint Michael's catcher Evan Balian failed to apply the tag, allowing Pizzonia to slide in safely.

Since he entered in what was then a 2-1 game, Zach Rovner collected his third decision in as many games. His 2.1 innings of one-hit, four-strikeout ball cemented a third save of 2024 for the righty, placing him in a tie for fifth among the NE10's save leaders.

Head Coach Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers have a full Saturday (Apr. 20) on their hands during a 12 noon doubleheader against Saint Anselm College. The team is dedicating both contests as its annual Morgan's Message game, and will recognize the 25-year anniversary of the 1999 College World Series team in the intermission between contests.
