Garden City, N.Y. - In a day highlighted by Senior Day, the Adelphi University softball team picked up two wins in its NE10 Championship re-match with Assumption University on Sunday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field.
The Panthers (20-16, 11-3 NE10) gained key wins over the Greyhounds (16-12, 10-3 NE10) by the final scores of 5-4 and 16-2, and now lead the NE10 by a game.Â
Game 1: Adelphi 5, Assumption 4 (F/9)
In a game with two errors in the opening frame, both teams were able to track some early momentum. While starter
Lindsey Hibbs held the first wave, the 'Cats were able to load the bases in the home half. A pair of flyouts kept the game scoreless going into the second.Â
Jordyn Pasqueralli didn't keep the deadlock going for long, as her second-inning single scored
Courtney Murphy and
Angela Lignelli, putting the 'Cats on top. Freshman
Kaitlyn Klepper followed that up with a deep double to the wall, increasing the margin to three runs by the end of the frame.
After walking the lead-off batter of the second inning, Hibbs then went on a tear of retiring 14 straight Greyhounds.
A passed ball scored the fourth run of the game for the Brown and Gold in the fifth. Hibbs took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but a ball that she leaped to get a hold of dropped to the dirt, putting the visitors in the hit column.Â
Looking to close out the contest in the seventh, Assumption loaded the bases after two singles and an error. A deep double from the road team's Jordan Dwyer, followed by a single and sacrifice fly tied the game up in a matter of four batters. With the hosts going down 1-2-3, the game was bound for extras.Â
With a relatively quiet eighth inning, the theatrics were ready in time for the ninth. Despite Dwyer getting another hit and advancing to second, the 'Cats were able to keep it tied heading into the bottom half. A
Jaden Farhat walk loaded the bases with just one out, in time for
Brianna Fischer to come to the plate. The sophomore took the first pitch she saw into straightaway center, scoring Klepper on a sacrifice fly to end the matinee in nine innings.Â
Game 2: Adelphi 16, Assumption 2 (F/5)
The offense got going even faster than before for the Panthers. A walk from senior
Faith Camilleri scored the first run of the game, with more to come in the shortened contest.Â
Even with the Greyhounds changing pitchers, the bats weren't playing favorites. A triple from Klepper and a sacrifice fly from
Courtney Wengryn upped the lead to five runs at the end of two.
Production came at its peak in the third, where RBIs from
Zee Zee Shreter, Pasqueralli, Klepper, Camilleri, Farhat, and Fischer put double digits on the scoreboard.
Kendall Winn's fly ball to right field was then dropped, scoring an additional two, giving the 'Cats the 14-0 advantage after three.Â
Assumption didn't go down without a fight, putting two runners on base in the fifth inning.
Tori Parente struck out her last batter to close out her second-consecutive appearance. Kenney earned her seventh win of the season on a final line of two earned runs on six hits in three innings.Â
Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers will continue their homestand on Wednesday (Apr. 17), when they take on Southern Connecticut State University. First pitch from Janet L. Ficke Field is set for 2:30 p.m.Â
