Waltham, Mass. - Coming off yesterday's sweep, the Adelphi University baseball team hung tough with Bentley University on Sunday, splitting with the Falcons in continuing a strong road trip for the 'Cats.
Although a comeback became a moot point in Game 1, Adelphi (14-16, 7-8 NE10) bounced back resiliently to take the nightcap from Bentley (19-12, 5-6 NE10).
The strong weekend currently moves the Panthers in front of Southern Connecticut for the Southwest Division's fourth and final playoff bid to the NE10 Championship.
Game 1: Adelphi 5, Bentley 7
A four-run sixth would carry the Brown and Gold back from a 5-1 deficit at the midway point of the contest.
While a three-run homer off
Brendan Kenneally in the home fifth seemed to bust the game open, Adelphi wasn't standing down.
In sending all nine 'Cats to the dish,
Alec Maag,
Joe Pellegrino and
Albert Ramos all strung together base hits to force Bentley to have to go to its bullpen. With already three RBIs this weekend,
Erick Duignan lifted a game-tying double to center.
After pitching a scoreless seventh, Bentley broke through against Adelphi reliever
Jacob Dannenberg in the eighth and never looked back. A lead-off single came back to haunt the Panthers, as a wild pitch and subsequent RBI single drove in Brendan Sencaj as the eventual game-winning run.
Bentley's Gabe White, who tossed three innings of scoreless relief, retired the Adelphi side in order in the ninth, striking out Maag to end the game.
Game 2: Adelphi 5, Bentley 4
The Panthers drew three walks in their opening turn at-bat to scratch the first run across against Bentley starter Steve Hardiman. The following inning, Maag doubled Adelphi's lead with a two-out RBI single to center.
With the lineup turning over a second time, the 'Cats broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning of a seven-inning contest.
As all nine Panthers went to bat again,
Jack Wishner delivered the go-ahead RBI single.
Greyson Pizzonia, who singled and stole third, came in on a wild pitch. Ramos found an opening, as well, for an RBI single.
Gavin Graff initially took the ball for 3.2 innings, but it was
Zach Rovner's 2.1 scoreless frames that won him his first decision of 2024.
Freshman pitcher
Jake Sekinski inherited trouble in the seventh, and still managed to work his way back off a balk to induce a game-ending double play with the bases loaded for his first collegiate save.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers close out their long 10-game road trip on Tuesday (Apr. 16) in Pomona, N.Y. at Dominican University of New York. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
