Oceanside, N.Y. - In a showdown between the two leading teams in the league, the Adelphi University men's tennis team opened a larger lead in the NE10 standings, following Saturday's 5-2 victory over conference rival Southern New Hampshire University at Point Set Racquet Club.
As both the Panthers (9-4, 6-0 NE10) and Penmen (9-4, 5-2 NE10) shared the NE10 regular-season championship a year ago, Adelphi has prevailed in back-to-back matches against SNHU for the first time since 2015, opening up a 1.5-game lead for this year's regular-season title.
Four 'Cats won in straight sets in the singles competition, but it was
Hugo Munoz Reinoso and
Reece Farrow's 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak at No. 2 doubles that initially paved the way.
With the doubles point now in its back pocket, Adelphi went to work in the singles portion of the match.
Coming off his performance in the tiebreak, Reinoso dominated in his No. 4 singles match, winning by a 6-1, 6-0 scoreline.
In the most highly-touted singles matches of the day,
Marko Jovanovic took down his fellow reigning NE10 Player of the Year Jesse Den Hartog, 6-2, 6-1, in top singles.
A pair of NE10 Rookie of the Year selections went head-to-head at the No. 2 flight, with
Viktor Hockl capturing a 6-4, 6-4 decision over SNHU's Jonathan Berling.
Thomas Horsley grabbed the clinching point of the match at No. 5 singles, with his 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Aron Ouwejan.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers have a key tune-up on tap this Wednesday (Apr. 17), when they travel to Flushing for a 12 p.m. first serve at Queens College.
