Worcester, Mass. - It took a pair of slugfests Saturday for the Adelphi University baseball team to prevail twice over NE10 foe Assumption University at H.L. Rocheleau Field.
In their first visit to Assumption since the 2022 NE10 Tournament, the Panthers (13-15, 6-7 NE10) swept their first doubleheader of 2024, winning a pair of high-scoring affairs.
Game 1: Adelphi 11, Assumption 7
The 'Cats piled it on throughout the contest. A three-run homer by
Joe Pellegrino in the seventh put the stamp on what was a staggering 8-1 lead at the time.
Pellegrino continues to ascend through the ranks of the NE10's home run leaders, now tying for fourth with six total roundtrippers this season -- tying a career-high.
Senior right-fielder
Greyson Pizzonia added to Adelphi's lead early with a pair of RBI singles. After a 3-for-5 day, Pizzonia was 9-for-20Â (.450) in his last five games with six RBIs.
Freshman catcher
Bryan McCleary, who has stepped into the starting catcher role, also produced runs in a couple of spots. Since assuming starter duties back on Mar. 29, McCleary is batting 8-for-25 (.320) at the dish.
The Greyhounds (8-19, 2-7 NE10) took a stand against Adelphi lockdown closerÂ
Coleton Reitan, tagging him for six runs in the ninth, although the visitors held on for the victory.
Senior southpaw
Carlos Acosta took the no-decision after 4.2 strong innings, but matched his career-high of 10 strikeouts from his debut outing of 2024 against Bridgeport on Feb. 25.
Game 2; Adelphi 10, Assumption 9
Even in a seven-inning game, the Panthers and Greyhounds still managed to rack up the runs.
Adelphi even piled it on early and jumped out to a 7-0 advantage by the third inning.
Alec Maag drove out his first homer since Opening Day, while
Jack Wishner and
Erick Duignan each doubled in a run after Maag's big fly in the third.
Maag, Duignan and
Albert Ramos all drove in two RBIs apiece in the nightcap, with Wishner and
L.J. Bohne adding an RBI each.
Freshman flamethrower
Dawson Montesa faced only three over the minimum through three, before trouble ensued in the fourth. A grand slam that sailed off the bat of Cody Smith had Assumption within a run at 8-7.
The turning point came in the fifth with
Michael Robinson batting for the 'Cats. A left-handed bat, Robinson hit a dribbler to the third-base side with the bases loaded, but Christopher Manzo's throw home evaded the catcher for the force, plating two key runs for the visitors.
Assumption managed to get those two runs back in the sixth, but
Zach Rovner struck out a pair of Greyhounds in the seventh to preserve his second career save.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers continue a long road trip tomorrow (Apr. 14) in Waltham, with a 12 noon doubleheader at Bentley University.
