Oceanside, N.Y. - In a return to Point Set for the first time this season, the Adelphi University men's tennis team triumphed against Chestnut Hill College, 7-0, in a key regional match-up Thursday in Oceanside.
As both teams vied for a berth to the NCAA Tournament last spring, the 'Cats were pegged as the co-favorite in the NE10 coaches' poll, and Chestnut Hill came in at No. 2 in the CACC preseason rankings.
It was the first meeting between the Panthers (5-2) and Griffins (2-1) since their NCAA Tournament bout in 2015-16 -- the last instance when Adelphi appeared in the NCAA Championship.
A tiebreak at No. 1 doubles ultimately went undecided, after the pairings ofÂ
Hugo Munoz Reinoso and
Reece Farrow, and
Thiago Negrao and
Viktor Hockl won at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights, respectively, to stake Adelphi to an early lead.
Once singles competition got underway, Hockl and
Casey Recci prevailed in straight sets to put the 'Cats on the cusp of victory.
Reinoso and
Marko Jovanovic both lost their opening sets, but Reinoso's 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 come-from-behind effort sealed it for the Brown and Gold. Jovanovic also took his match the distance at No. 1 singles, rallying for a 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory.
Thomas Horsley won a second-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles, resulting in a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) straight-set decision.
Matias Hoyos wrapped up the day with an eight-game pro-set victory at No. 6 singles.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers will take the weekend off to prepare for a 12 noon contest next Saturday (Mar. 16) at University of the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C.
