Cary, N.C. - At the site of the NCAA Division II College World Series, the Adelphi University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Dominican University on Thursday, falling 6-1 and 11-2 at Coleman Field.
Game 1: Adelphi 1, Dominican 6
The free passes doomed right-handed starter
John Carver, who issued three walks and allowed two runs in his only two-plus innings of work.
A five-pitch lead-off walk to begin the second inning was followed by an RBI triple that got Dominican on the board first.
In an early two-run hole, the 'Cats threatened in their half of the second.
Philip D'Aguanno and
Jack Wishner led off with back-to-back singles, before
Jose Matos grounded into a double play to erase a pair of runners. A subsequent
Anthony Rigogliosi groundout left D'Aguanno stranded at third.
Even with an early hook for Carver,
Gavin Graff was unable to stop the bleeding for long. A lead-off double set the table for a four-run fourth -- albeit on soft contact --Â against the third-year hurler.
Meanwhile, Dominican starter Jedadiah Trudeau settled in and fired a complete-game six-hitter with three strikeouts.
Albert Ramos continued his hot play of late, turning in a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored. The rest of the 'Cats batted a combined 4-for-23 and 0-for-8Â with runners in scoring position.
Game 2: Adelphi 2, Dominican 11
In the nightcap, the Panthers succumbed to another big inning. With the first ten Chargers reaching base successfully in the third, Dominican jumped out to a blistering 9-0 advantage.
A lineup card chock-full of freshmen,
Erick Duignan,
Justin Wilkinson and
Bryan McCleary all made their first collegiate starts for the Brown and Gold.
The Panthers stranded runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings, and -- in total -- left seven runners on base throughout the seven-inning contest.
In the visiting half of the sixth,
Joe Pellegrino doubled in a run, and McCleary drove in his first collegiate RBI to account for Adelphi's only scoring of the game.
Coming off a couple of quality outings,
Steven Proko surrendered five hits and seven runs in a start that lasted 2.1 innings.
Jacob Dannenberg and
Cam Letourneau each let up two runs in relief.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers will quickly wrap up their Cary trip tomorrow (Mar. 8) with a 9:30 a.m. non-conference game against The College of Saint Rose.
