Cary, N.C. - Eight of nine players in the starting lineup drove in runs Friday morning to lead the Adelphi University baseball team to a 12-4 non-conference win over The College of Saint Rose at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary.
A two-run first for the Golden Knights was quickly answered by a four-run outburst in Adelphi's opening turn at-bat.
As the first three hitters in the inning all singled to load the bases,
Philip D'Aguanno worked a seven-pitch walk, and
Joe Pellegrino followed with a sacrifice fly to level the score at 2-all.
In sending 34 total 'Cats to the plate, Adelphi struck out only five times. Nearly half of the team's runs in the game came by way of walk, sacrifice fly or even error, but it was
James Eden's two-out, two-run first-inning single that put the Panthers in front for good.
The Brown and Gold worked productive at-bats all afternoon, amassing twelve hits and drawing eight walks against Saint Rose pitching, to go along with four sacrifices.
With a comfortable 6-2 lead,
Carlos Acosta retired 12 of 13 batters between the second through fifth innings. Only one of the four runs allowed between Acosta and
Coleton Reitan -- who earned the save -- were earned.
The first four hitters in the Adelphi lineup all collected multiple hits, while Eden and fellow freshmen
Anthony Rigogliosi and
Erick Duignan all scored two or more runs.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers will now make the trek home and host reigning ECC Tournament champion Queens College for a 3 p.m. first pitch Tuesday (Mar. 12) at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City, N.Y.
