Six-Run Comeback Fuels Softball's Sweep Over Saint Michael's; 3-1, 10-8

Garden City, N.Y. - Anchored by 21 combined strikeouts from star pitcher Lindsey Hibbs, the Adelphi University softball team swept its doubleheader with Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon, by the final scores of 3-1 and 10-8.

Game 1: Adelphi 3, Saint Michael's 1
In a day with sunny skies and a crowd filled with local teams, the show came early. Courtney Wengryn's single through the right side brought home Courtney Murphy to give the Panthers the first run of the game.

Taking advantage keyed the offense throughout the game, as Zee Zee Shreter singled in the following inning to bring home freshman Kaitlyn Klepper, who earlier reached on an error.

Hibbs kept the Purple Knights' in check early, going perfect through the first three frames. That ended on the first batter of the fourth, who was later brought home by opposing pitcher Jenna Devens to cut the deficit back in half to one.

A deep fly ball over the left field fence from Klepper doubled the lead once more for the Brown and Gold, for her team-leading third of the season. Threatening for more in the fifth, Wengryn hit another single to center, but Murphy was gunned down at home by the fielder to end the inning.

Saint Michael's biggest threat came in the road half of the sixth, where two walks and a double led to bases loading with two outs. However, a clutch strikeout on a full count from Hibbs halted any further momentum.

The Purple and Gold looked for some last resorts, but going down 1-2-3 all in strikeout form bumped up Hibbs' total on the day to 14 and gave the 'Cats their first NE10 win of the season.

Game 2: Adelphi 10, Saint Michael's 8
The nightcap to Youth Day saw much more twists and turns. With Lily Kenney making her 12th appearance of the season, she looked to settle in against the visitors. Two singles in the second frame gave the Purple Knights' an early three run lead, with a double further extending that margin to five by inning's end.

Hibbs entered the contest to start the third inning. Her first batter hit a deep center field home run that increased the lead to six, making the game look grim early for the Brown and Gold. Doubles from Kendall Winn and Tori Parente scored two for the 'Cats at the end of three. Faith Camilleri's two RBI double cut the deficit to just two by the end of the fourth frame. With Hibbs containing Saint Michael's through the road half of the sixth, drama was ready to ensue in the bottom half.

With Faith Camilleri getting her third RBI of the day on another double, what was once a six run lead had dwindled to just one with two runners in scoring position. Another familiar name of that game in Winn stepped up to the plate and smashed a ball that fell just short of the left field wall. Camilleri and Jordyn Pasqueralli came in to score though, giving Adelphi their first lead of the game in the sixth frame. Some insurance runs coming from the bats of Brianna Fischer and Wengryn bumped the run total up to ten.

As Hibbs came to close out the game and potentially earn a win, the Purple and Gold had not given up quite yet. A two-run shot trimmed the lead in half, as the visitors only trailed by two with one out. With two runners on, the Canada native struck out her last two batters, combining for 21 on the day and completing the sweep.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers will now travel on Tuesday (Apr. 2), when they take on College of Staten Island. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
