Women's Tennis Turned Back By STAC, 6-1

Garden City, N.Y. - In its only home match of the spring, the Adelphi University women's tennis team fell to ECC stronghold St. Thomas Aquinas College, 6-1, in Garden City on Tuesday afternoon.

In doubles, the No. 1 and No. 2 pairings for the 'Cats nearly yanked the team point out from underneath STAC's feet.

Although the No. 1 team of Katarina Liedbeck and Roisin Boyd earned a key break that resulted in a 6-4 come-from-behind victory, Astrid Bergh and Carolina Chaves were unable to preserve a 5-4 lead at the No. 2 flight, in what was an eventual 7-5 loss.

Liedbeck was also in cruise control in singles competition, accounting for the team's lone point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 top-singles result.

Boyd was neck-and-neck with STAC's Amanda Kadiri to start at No. 2 singles, but the freshman had her second-set struggles in a 7-5, 6-0 defeat.

Bergh impressively rallied to take her opening set after trailing 4-1, and still fell short in three sets -- ultimately dropping a 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 decision at No. 3 singles.

Caterina Federici, Chaves and Elisabeth Seyfarth all went down in straight sets to round out the day for the Panthers, who fell to 11-3 overall.

Head Coach Rebecca Fakas and her Adelphi squad will continue prepping for the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, Apr. 11, when the 'Cats travel to Flushing for an 11 a.m. matinee at Queens College.
