Softball Splits With Saint Leo to Wrap Florida Trip; 3-0, 5-2

Saint Leo, Fla. - In its last non-conference match-up before NE10 play begins next weekend, the Adelphi University softball team split its last doubleheader in Florida against Saint Leo University, by the final scores of 3-0 and 5-2.

Game 1: Adelphi 0, Saint Leo 3
The Panthers first managed to put runners in scoring position in the top of the second, but a strikeout from Faith Camilleri moved us to the home half of the inning.

The Lions used similar tactics moving their runners into scoring position after a successful sacrifice. Lindsey Hibbs fanned a couple to thwart that initial momentum. A double in the following frame proved to also be of no consequence, sending us to the fourth.

As the 'Cats went down 1-2-3, the hosts threatened once more, with just one out and a runner on third. A throwing error by Kaitlyn Klepper at the plate brought home the first run of the game. A later steal of second scored the second runner after the throw. Rounding out the inning, a sacrifice fly to left ended the inning with three on the board for Saint Leo.

With an uneventful fifth, the Brown and Gold looked to get back on track with just six outs to play with. Brianna Fischer's hit by pitch, followed by a double steal from herself and Courtney Murphy, put two more on at second and third with two outs in the frame. A subsequent Courtney Wengryn strikeout gave the offense just one more opportunity. With three outs in as many batters, the 'Cats looked to pick up one in the nightcap.

Game 2: Adelphi 5, Saint Leo 2
In a trend that also seems familiar, the nightcap did not have the same slow pace as the matinee. The home half of the first frame saw a deep double from Madyson Coe break the ice right away, scoring one from second. Lily Kenney was able to get two more outs in as many batters shortly after.

With the Panthers searching for their first run of the day, the second inning showed testaments of refusing to quit. Despite the first two batters being retired, singles from Lignelli and Angelina Kellogg ignited a rally. Murphy then came to the plate and sent one over the center fielder's head, scoring both of them and putting the lead in the hands of the visitors.

More of the same was seen next inning, when a Jaden Farhat walk set up Sacripante smacking one to the gaps, scoring both Farhat and Wengryn to double Adelphi's run total at 4-1.

Kenney began to find her footing again in the later innings, sitting down ten consecutive batters from the second through the first batter of the fifth. Only allowing two singles between there and the end of six, the 'Cats were set up nicely going into the final frame.

A sacrifice fly from Kendall Winn scored Zee Zee Shreter to set up some final insurance going into the home half. Two initial outs began the inning, with a double and single bringing home Saint Leo's second run of the night. A flyout ended the night for both sides in a split.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and Adelphi will fly back to the East Coast and finish their road trip on Sunday (Mar. 24), when they take on Wilmington University in a re-match of last year's NCAA Division II Super Regional. Game time is set for 12 noon.
