Wilmington, Del. - Following its tough Florida tour, the Adelphi University softball team returned north to take on no. 24 Wilmington University on Sunday, ultimately dropping both contests in non-conference action, in a rematch of the 2023 East Super Regional.
Game 1: Adelphi 0, Wilmington 2
Wilmington got on the board first in the opener of the doubleheader, scoring on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the first inning. It wasn't until the top of the third that Adelphi got any momentum, when
Kaitlyn Klepper singled and stole a base, making it all the way the third but was left stranded.
Lindsey Hibbs managed to keep the Wildcats scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings, as the defense aided in securing three consecutive outs in each. The Panthers (7-13)
had a chance to push a run across in the fourth when
Jaden Farhat reached on a single to right field, but Wildcats' pitcher Kylee Gunkel retired the side with a flyout.
With two outs, the home team found a way to plate its second run, following a lead off single coupled with a stolen base. Sara Miller used a stand up triple to advance Tristyn Stewart to make it 2-0 Wilmington.
Courtney Wengryn led off the seventh frame with a single, however the ensuing lineup was unable to string any hits together, concluding the opener with a 2-0 loss.
Game 2: Adelphi 0, Wilmington 7
Adelphi threatened with two runners on the basepaths in the third of game two, but were held to no runs after
Brianna Fischer lined out to right center. The home team opened up the scoring in the bottom half of the frame when they brought in four runs on two hits - capitalizing on two miscues from the Panthers in the field.
The Panthers did not find a way on base until the top of the sixth, when
Courtney Murphy landed a bunt single with one out. Wengryn followed that up with a shot to left field and the bases became loaded after a Farhat walk. Unfortunately for the visitors, Wilmington managed to retire the side and escape the inning.
The home team extended its lead to seven in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of four hits all off
Lily Kenney. In the circle for the Wildcats, Delani Sheehan held the Panthers scoreless through seven innings, allowing just five hits.
Northeast-10 Conference play is next on the docket for Adelphi, when they host Franklin Pierce on Friday, March 29. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. on Janet L. Ficke Field.
