Hibbs Breaks Career Strikeout Record as Softball Drops Both to #4 Tampa; 2-1, 4-0

Tampa, Fla. - In a historic day for Lindsey Hibbs, the Adelphi University softball team dropped both legs of its doubleheader with No. 4 University of Tampa, 2-1 and 4-0.

Game 1: Adelphi 1, No. 4 Tampa 2 (F/11)
Hibbs returned to the circle for her eighth start of the season, this time against a Top 5 nationally-ranked opponent. What loomed in the background -- however -- would transcend the reach of one season.

Adelphi Athletic Hall of Famer Julie Bolduc's record of 790 career strikeouts while pitching for the then-Division I Panthers stood tall for over 35 years after her last season in 1987. Hibbs would head into the second inning with two K's already under her belt, needing three more to make her mark in the record book.

It only took three batters to get two more strikeouts for the tie, with Tampa's Lexie Chevalier then stepping to the plate. Swing and a miss has defined the Ontario native's career, and the home catcher went down the same way to give Hibbs sole possession of the all-time record.

"I'm truly happy for Lindsey - she's been a bright light for Adelphi softball over her career. If she's anything like me, I never knew how many strikeouts I had, but knew how fun it was to strike people out. At the end of the day we are just doing our job to help our team win," said Bolduc of the achievement.

As shutdown as the graduate student was, the other side was generating similar success. A few one-hit innings from Jordyn Pasquerallli, Alexa Sacripante, and Faith Camilleri couldn't generate any further momentum through the fifth, as the 'Cats had only slapped three hits on the day through the sixth inning. Going into the seventh, the visitors tried to put it away, but three consecutive putouts sent us to the bottom half. Despite giving up a two-out single in the seventh, Hibbs was able to get her third out and send the game to extras.

The next three innings did not see much offense from Adelphi, although a lead-off single in the 10th from Sacripante broke the cold streak. Three subsequent outs from Hibbs in the bottom half brought us to the 11th.

After Pasqueralli and Brianna Fischer got on base with singles, Courtney Wengryn hit one of her own down the left-field line. Unfortunately, Pasqueralli got gunned down at home plate. Jaden Farhat found contact to the outfield, as well, bringing home Fischer to finally break the deadlock.

In the home half, the two initial batters got on base from a walk and error. In a similar play from the last half of the inning, a single to the outfield was successfully thrown out at home by Kaitlyn Klepper after she cut off Wengryn's throw. However, the next batter singled to left field, with both runs coming home from second and third, ending the contest, 2-1.

Game 2: Adelphi 0, No. 4 Tampa 4
Offense didn't take nearly as long to show itself, as the Spartans put runners on second and third with just one out in the first frame. A single up the middle brought home the first two runs of the contest.

Starter Lily Kenney was able to subdue most pressure after that, putting together three scoreless innings. The third inning saw a solo home run put another run on the board for Tampa, but the three runs stayed through the fifth. A stretch of three consecutive singles from the hosts brought home the fourth run, further increasing the deficit.

The Panthers had spurts throughout the game where solid momentum was being built. In the second for example, two hits from Farhat and Camilleri had the Brown and Gold threatening. However, the latter resulted in an 8-2 putout at home, preserving the shutout.

Three innings later, Courtney Murphy hit a single, with Kendall Winn advancing her to a second with a single of her own. A foulout from Pasqueralli later thwarted that push. Despite Sacripante reaching on an error to start the seventh, three consecutive outs sealed the shutout, ending the day at 4-0.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers will wrap up their Florida trip tomorrow (Mar. 20), when they take on Saint Leo University. Game time set for 5:30 p.m.
