Lakeland, Fla. - Capped by a nine-inning win, the Adelphi University softball team swept its doubleheader with Florida Southern College on Sunday afternoon, by the final scores of 1-0 and 7-3.Â
Game 1: Adelphi 1, Florida Southern 0
This one boasted two pitchers who were able to subdue pressure when the opposition was threatening in any way.
Lindsey Hibbs continued her dominant ways, allowing just one hit through five innings of play. After a single and walk in the third put runners on first and second, the Ontario native sat FSC's Skyler Ralstin on strikes. A lead-off double in the sixth put the Mocs in a good spot, but the hosts still went into the final inning without a run.Â
As much as Hibbs was slowing down Florida Southern, Taylor Thomas was doing just the same for the Mocs. Even with singles in each of the first three frames, the 'Cats were never able to put together more than that hit, keeping the game deadlocked.Â
Courtney Wengryn hit a deep lead-off double to left to open the fourth, before a pair of foul outs and a popout halted that momentum.
Brianna Fischer added a double in the sixth, but the same trend continued with two subsequent flyouts.Â
In the top of the seventh,
Jaden Farhat got things going with a ball in the gap.
Faith Camilleri's sacrifice bunt then moved pinch-runner Angeline Montanez to third, leading to
Kendall Winn coming to the plate in a pinch-hit spot. She flared a pitch just over the infield to plate Montanez and score the first run of the game for either side.
Game 2: Adelphi 7, Florida Southern 3 (F/9)
The nightcap brought an entirely different run environment.
Wengryn came up once more in the No. 3 hole and pulled a pitch to left, scoring
Jordyn Pasqueralli from second to put the Brown and Gold on the board instantaneously. After stealing second, Farhat also broke one through to the outfield, doubling the lead before Adelphi's half of the first came to a close.Â
Florida Southern responded though. A first-inning sacrifice fly cut the hosts' deficit in half.
Lily Kenney was able to get record a quick two outs in the second inning, with the lone baserunner advancing to second on a groundout. A triple that split Wengryn and Pasqueralli brought home the tying run, with an immediate throwing error from Farhat putting the hosts on top after two.Â
With no movement in the third, the Panthers were ready to apply the pressure, as a double from Camilleri and a groundout put the tying run at third with just one out. Pasqueralli scored pinch-runner
Kadie Cain to tie the game again at the end of the fourth.Â
After another 1-2-3 inning from Kenney, Hibbs appeared in relief starting in the fifth. The two then combined to allow no hits through the sixth. With the game tied heading into the bottom of the seventh, Hibbs was once again placed in a risky position with a two-out double putting two in scoring position. A flyout from the Mocs determined we had more softball to play.Â
Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the eighth, but an error put
Courtney Murphy on base with Winn taking a base on balls to start the ninth.
Pasqueralli's double to right field broke the tie, putting the 'Cats on top, 4-3. It was Fischer's following double that blew the game open, scoring both Winn and Pasqueralli to increase the margin to three. An RBI single down the line for
Makayla Comer added further insurance.
Hibbs was able to close out the victory for the Brown and Gold, earning her fourth win of the season and second of the day.Â
Head Coach
Carla Campagna and the Panthers will now take on their highest-ranked opponent of the season Tuesday (Mar. 19) in No. 4 University of Tampa. Game time is set for 4 p.m. Â
