Garden City, N.Y. - In what turned out to be a sunny and clear day at Janet L. Ficke Field, the Adelphi University softball team took both legs of its doubleheader against Queens on Wednesday afternoon, by the final scores of 6-1 and 10-2.
Game 1: Adelphi 6, Queens 1
Lindsey Hibbs proved to be the anchor for the Panthers yet again, serving up nine strikeouts while taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
Only allowing three baserunners into the fifth, a hit by pitch and error opened up an opportunity with a runner just 60 feet away. Queens' Briana Call laid down a bunt that
Alexa Sacripante was able to field, but scored a runner for the Knights, putting them on the board without a hit.
Offense proved to be the theme for most of the day, but the first two innings of Game 1 would've told you otherwise. Unable to get a hit until late in the third, an untimely error at shortstop scored
Angelina Kellogg, putting the Panthers on top. Following a two-out infield single from
Courtney Wengryn, the home team stretched its lead to two after three.
Pressure began to build in the fifth frame, where a two-run single from
Jaden Farhat brought home Wengryn and
Jordyn Pasqueralli. After a deep double to center field by Angeline Montanez, the margin had ballooned to 6-1.
Despite Queens getting two more hits in the latter innings, Hibbs earned her second win of the year, improving her season ERA to 1.75.
Game 2: Adelphi 10, Queens 2 (F/5)
Queens' bats were ready for
Lily Kenney right out of the gate in the nightcap, loading the bases by the clean-up spot. After a single broke through the middle, the visitors were able to score first, putting two in the run column.
Unfortunately for the Knights, the home offense had more up their sleeve.
Brianna Fischer smoked a home run to dead center from the two spot to wake up the raging crowd. A sacrifice fly in the second from
Angela Lignelli scored freshman
Kaitlyn Klepper to tie up the ballgame, giving Fischer another chance at the plate.
On the first pitch she saw, the ball soared over the left-center field fence, blowing the game wide open and giving the 'Cats a 5-2 advantage. Sacripante's leadoff double the following inning set up Klepper for another power opportunity, hitting her first home collegiate home run to left field, increasing the lead to five. An insurance double from Lignelli added another before the third inning came to a close.
Kenney kept Queens in check as the offensive explosion dispersed, going 1-2-3 in the second, third, and fourth frames. A lead-off single from Call with a subsequent steal led some to hold their breath with just one out in the inning. However, two flyouts, including a tough game-ending catch from
Courtney Murphy sent everyone home in five innings.
Head Coach
Carla Campagna and Adelphi will now head down to the Sunshine State, where they'll play three doubleheaders before returning home to start NE10 play.
