Waltham, Mass. - In a showdown at a Top 10 nationally-ranked conference opponent, the Adelphi University women's basketball team was kept to its lowest single-game scoring performance of the season Saturday in a 64-39 loss against No. 8 Bentley University at the Dana Center.
The leading scorer for the 'Cats was
Isabella Asencio, who finished with 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Seven different Panthers made it on the scoresheet in the contest.
Adelphi was already trying to claw its way out of a 15-point hole before halftime. A pair of buckets for Asencio and fellow freshman guard
Lauren Beberman, followed by a
Rolanda Robinson three, rallied the Brown and Gold to within 27-19 at the 1:20 mark.
It was in the third quarter, when an 18-8 scoring differential for the Falcons (19-2, 14-1 NE10) opened the floodgates. Bentley's Kylie DuCharme and Maggie Whitmore sank back-to-back threes that grew the hosts' lead to nearly twenty points with 6:12 left.
Meanwhile, the Adelphi offense sputtered through the third quarter, scoring just four points over the period's final 7:20.
Bentley doubled up Adelphi on the offensive glass and made the most of its second-chance opportunities, outscoring the Panthers 14-2 in that category.
The 'Cats never led in the contest, ultimately dropping their 11th in a row to fall to 4-17 overall and 2-13 in NE10 play.
Adelphi will take the court next on Wednesday (Feb. 7), when the Panthers host their Breast Cancer Awareness Game -- in support of the Kay Yow Fund -- against NE10 rival University of New Haven at 5:30 p.m.
