Tampa, Fla. - Concluding a successful business trip, the no. 4 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team will return north with an unblemished record after taking down no. 3 University of Tampa on Wednesday, 13-6.
Kelly-Ann McGrath and
Danielle Marino both collected hat tricks in the top-five victory, while six other individuals recorded goals. Between the pipes for Adelphi,
Jillian McFadden finished with seven saves, anchoring a defense that caused 13 turnovers.
It was a tightly contested opening frame as the home team scored the first two tallies of the contest, but the Panthers responded with three straight, beginning with a strike from McGrath.
Marielle Colalillo and
Kerrin Heuser tacked on the next two goals, respectively, after the visitors held a 5-4 advantage in overall shots.
Following a Tampa goal start the second quarter - which tied the game at three - the flood gates opened and the Panther attack put up six unanswered goals to lead by as many at the halftime break. With the help of draw control wins from
Courtney Carollo and McGrath, the Cats led 5-2 in that category throughout the second and 12-9 ultimately for the contest.
The teams traded goals in the third, but the hosts had the bigger lift after getting into a six-goal deficit. The Colombo sisters teamed up for Tampa's last goal in the third, giving the home team a 3-2 edge in scoring for the frame, but still trailed by five with 15 minutes left in regulation.
A penalty that carried over from the third started Adelphi in a player-up possession to open the fourth, and while
Tamia Lawson landed a shot on goal, Savvy Barbosa earned the stop to provide a scoring opportunity for her Spartans. Charging down the field, Tampa took three shots, with the final being stopped by McFadden, all but sealing their fate.
Sonny Lionetti knocked a ball loose that McGrath took to the cage and scored to double the score at 12-6. Lawson got in the last word with her final strike at 4:08, while the home team struggled to get any momentum in their offensive zone.
This marks the first loss for the Spartans and evens the all-time record for the pair at 1-1.
Adelphi returns north and will head to East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Mar. 9 for non-conference action starting at 12:00 p.m.
