Albany, N.Y. - With half its buckets finding a way in, the Adelphi University men's basketball program found a way back to the win column with an 86-81 victory at the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday.
Elijah Lewis was the team's leading scorer in the win, collected 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. Notching his first double-double of the season,
Mason Jackson scored 12 points and pulled down 10 boards as the Cats narrowly out-rebounded their opponent.
Dayshaun Walton and
Andrew Delaney also reached double-figure scoring, accounting for 14 and 12, respectively.
At 11:31 in the first, Adelphi (17-9, 13-7 NE10) worked out to its largest lead of the half, when a three-pointer by Lewis made it a 19-13 contest. From there, the Golden Knights produced a 10-3 stretch to take a one-point lead and even extended it to four at 7:12, but
Matthew Price and
Conor Regan each knocked down three pointers to return the advantage to the visitors. Never pulling ahead by more than six,
David Luberoff put in a turnaround jumper at the buzzer to give the Panthers a five-point lead at the half.
Both sides saw 17 points from its bench with Saint Rose capitalizing on 14 second chance points in the first half alone.
Coming out of the locker room, the road team saw its largest lead of nine at 17:59 when Luberoff made one of two free throw attempts to make the score 50-41. Several Panther miscues turned into eight straight points for the Golden Knights to bring the game within one but a triple from
Seth Brown kept the hosts at bay.
Under the 10 minute mark, neither side managed to string together enough points to hold a comfortable lead, until a three-point play for Lewis sparked a nine point run from the sophomore alone, capped with a trey at 3:39. At 1:02, Saint Rose's Dante Weise made a layup that forced a
Dave Duke timeout. In a game of forcing fouls to regain possession, the Panthers were nearly flawless at the free throw line down the stretch to hold on for an 86-81 victory.
Adelphi will be home for its final regular season contest on Saturday, Feb. 24. Prior to tip-off, the team and department will recognize the members of the graduating class.
